I don't want to take food out of Rick's mouth, but.... I am off this week with not much to do. There is a state park 2 miles from my house with camping and cabins. Bring the bike or tranny up. We should be able to figure this out. I have a motorcycle lift and tools (plus beer).

Thanks for the recommendation Bob. I know Rick does great work. He sorted out an electrical issue for me earlier.

      Erik,

I appreciate the offer but I cannot come up this week. I am not sure if I am going to attempt to tackle this myself or not. I have the ability to do it here with one of the guys I work with so I may just do that this winter. If not, I will figure out something. She will have to just sit for now though. Too many priorities at this point to start another project. As long as she is finished by Vech's get together in April, I will be happy.

      Have a great Thanksgiving.

      Steve

I have decided to take Louise up to see Uncle Rick. I will drop her off on the 30th and let her stay for a month or so. I know she will be perrrrrrfect when he is done.

Louise is now all tucked in at Uncle Rick's for however long it takes. I expect to have her back mid March though. I like Rick's shop. He has plenty of room to move around in there!

            THe grisly remains....my initial findings

The subject line says it all.

Here is Rick's e-mail to me:

            "Steve,
I got it apart, and as I expected it wasn't pretty-I could tell when the drain plug came out with a chunk stuck to it big enough to have a part number on it-

The forward bearing on the output shaft had failed catastrophically, allowing the shaft to displace axially enough to allow the output flange to contact and ultimately break off the flange for the rubber boot, and put a hole in the rubber-there's your leak!

This is one of the worst run-to-failure output bearings I've seen,it's incredible there isn't serious collateral damage from this one.
If this failure had occurred in a helo gearbox it probably would have created a smoking hole in the ground-

No worries though, it will repair nicely-bearings should be here tomorrow.
            Cheers, rick"

I am just glad that I was not on the road when I found the initial indication!!!

This is number three in transmissions for me in just over four years!! And I was gone for one of those years!!!

BMW transmissions!! My R90/6 was rebuilt several years ago by Oak who is suppose to be the #1 guru on old air heads. Then last year at the Chicken Rally, on Bob Steber's vintage ride, it started to jump out of gear. I had put no more than 1,000 miles on it since Oak's rebuild. When I called him he got real defensive about it initially, then told me to send it to him. After inspection he said it showed signs of advanced wear. I told him if it was worn excessively now it was 1,000 miles ago. He fixed it at no charge and sent it back and asked me to put some miles on it and report back. So far so good. He told me he spent $900 on parts to fix it and he was going to eat the cost under the circumstances. After I rode it several hundred miles I sent him a check for $450. He was happy, and so was I. I had spent $900 initially and now another $450. Seems to be right now.

                Tim.

Real glad to hear your /6 is going again. Rick rebuilt two transmissions for me (R90s and R100GS). Both are doing great, especially considering my passion for throttle twisting in the twisties .

Update from Rick: Louise is back together and alive. He will be doing the tune up this week and she will be ready for another 83K miles!!!!!!

He had a doner back cover for the transmisison just laying around the shop. I didn't plan on picking her up until mid March, but that might change now.

I'm anxious to see my old girl friend. I will be picking up Louise next Sunday on the way back from Pigeon Forge. I can't wait to ride her! The bike that is!

That is what she sounds like now thanks to Rick. I will take Louise to work this morning and see how she rides.
