  • H4 conversion on my '72 R50/5

Check out my H4 conversion on my /5. I separated the bulb and the ring with a propane torch (soldered together). Second, I cut the ring on the H4 bulb with pliers and pulled the ring away from the electrically welded base. I then slid the new bulb (sans mounting ring) into the old mounting ring. I soldered the two together and reassembled the whole thing (I removed the silver bulb cover inside the headlight first). Works good so far. Now I need to figure out why it wont start.

I also plan to do this with an HID bulb. This was just a test.

        Hey Jimmy,

Be very careful with the higher wattage bulb. I put an Osram bulb in with the same wattage as yours and it melted the wires attached to it and caused a serious shortage and subsequent killing of the battery on my R100RS. I found the problem on my trip to Wisconsin after doing the so called upgrade. Rick Jones would not recommend this at all. The wires are not strong enough to carry this load.

I will keep that in mind. I am planning to put in an HID kit at some point. It uses a lower (35w I think) wattage bulb. I used that particular higher wattage bulb because it was a cheap quality bulb I had laying around.

Forget that last part. I just looked back and saw I had already said that in an earlier reply.
