  • 75 R75/6 intermittent starting-- I made it worse!

Greetings all, I'm definitely only an amateur bike mechanic, but am learning all the time, and enjoy reading the posts on this forum. Now I'm stumped with my own airhead.

My R75/6 developed an intermittent starter problem after a battery tender failed and boiled the battery over. Unfortunately, I didn't notice it and it sat and boiled for over a month.

I replaced the battery, and also checked the starter as suggested on other posts and forums. I also check the stater button-- all checked OK.

The starter relay connectors looked really corroded with the blue green battery junk. I'm assuming this was from the battery meltdown issue.

I took the eight wires off, marking them with tape labels to get them back on correctly, and cleaned all the corrosion off of both the connectors and posts on the relay.

After cleaning I put the relay on, plugged in the wires, and put the tank back on. Turned the key and... nothing. Totally dead. No "dash" light, no horn, no electronics at all.

After getting really depressed, I managed to refrain from dragging into the yard and setting it on fire. Now a week later, I've checked the continuity from the connectors on the realy up a few inches to where they dissappear into the harness with a needle point probe through the insulation. I thought maybe the wires were corroded inside the insulation and I broke one when cleaning the terminials. I also used the meter to check that the relay was properly grounded to the bike-- not sure if it even needs to be, but I couldn't think of anything else.

The only thing I can think of is that I dropped the relay about two feet when cleaning it. I'm not sure what they are like inside or if this could have damaged it.

I did notice from lookinig on the wiring diagram that a hot wire comes from the battery to the relay via a red wire. Another red wire takes the positive to the terminal block in the headlight bucket. From that terminal, another short red lead goes to the key switch.

However, there is no power out of the relay to the terminal and key switch-- the power goes in to the relay from the battery, but the red wire coming out is dead-- even with the key on.

Does this mean the relay is shot? Could I have killed it by dropping it two feet?

Thanks in advance for any advice. This one is driving me nuts. I was hoping to take this bike to Vintage Motorcycle Days in July-- bummer if I can't get it going.

Sorry to hear you are having problems.

Did you check to see if the "kill switch" was positioned correctly? If it is pointed either to the left or right, you will not have current.

Call Rick Jones and beg and plead for him to fix it for you.

Bob, thanks for the reply. I just checked the kill switch. It appears to be in the middle positon. I switched it back and forth a few times and then put it back in the middle. Everything is still totally dead.

Hey, jdubeemer. I'd love to have Rick work on it. Do you think he would make a house-call to Cleveland? (I know this is an Alabama forum, but I actually live in Cleveland, Ohio).

One of the reasons I started learning to work on the Airhead is that our local BMW shop doesn't inspire much confidence regarding the older bikes. Trying to support local business, I asked them about fixing something on my airhead, and they looked at me like I was from mars. They acted like it was weird and unreasonable that I shoud ask them about such an "ancient" bike. I ended calling Bob's for the part and doing it myself. I really wish there was someone around here that I could bring it to-- but no luck so far.

Hey Fred, Sorry, I didn't realize you were so far away. The Airmarshal for Ohio in the Airheads Beemer Club is Doug McGee, 419 310 2102 or dmcgee76@gmail.com. I'm sure he can advise you on who to contact in your area for technical assistance. He's not too far away in Sandusky.

            Fred.

Here is the link for Rick Jones' Motorrad Elektrik "Classic Boxer Charging" book and wiring diagram.

Rick's book is a must have for airhead owners and may help you determine the problem with your airhead.

              Hey Fred,

I have a brand new starter relay and the harness to go with it. I will make you a heck of a deal on it if interested. Just let me know. You want to send Rick an e-mail or call him and tell him what happened. He will steere you in the right direction. He is a heck of a guy.

              Maybe the regulator got fried?

              Good luck,

              Steve

Hey everyone. Thanks so much for all the info and resources. Steve I sent you a private message about your relay. I'll post again if I can figure out the problem. Or if any of you Airhead Electronics Experts out there have any ideas please post them. Thanks again.
