Seems like my R1100rt has developed a dislike for downshifting from 4th to 3rd sometimes. Any ideas?

I am not an experienced oilhead mechanic, but from what I understand, to do it properly, the transmission needs to be taken out. I have heard some say you can apply a little lube if you pull the starter and go in from there. I haven't done it so I can't say for sure. I am pulling my tranny this winter to lube splines, check clutch wear, and replace the slave cyl.'15 R1200RT

You do not have to pull the transmission out for the spline lube. You can pull it back about 2-3" and get to it that way. It is an involved process that took me about 4 hours to get to. The bike gets craked in half and lifted from the back and pulled up via a rachet strap to the handle bars. There are DVDs out there that show the process. You will have to buy some very long screws (M8 I believe) to thread into the transmission so you can pull it back along them and not disturb the clutch allignment. We bought mine at Autozone. Some have cut the heads off and then made a regular spade slot so the head does not get in the way.

Thanks for the info Steve. Rode around most of the day with my son in tow and had no problems, thankfully. Was not looking forward to major repairs this winter. I am glad that I found the problem before I got in too deep. I really love this bike and have put 4000+ miles on it since June. Looking forward to many more...Bob
