  • Battery install on '07 R1200RT

Is there anything that will need to be re-set or re-initiated (except the clock, perhaps) on my '07 R1200RT when I remove the old/very weak battery and install a new battery? I know to remove the negative terminal first and tie it off to avoid contact with anything until the new battery is set in place. Are there any electrical systems or related sensors which will need to be reset by a technician (which I would not be able to accomplish myself)?

Secondarily, would there be merit in attaching my BMW "trickle" charger to the new battery prior to installation?

With cold weather here the old battery is showing signs of being tired and will soon be unable to turn the starter over. Getting four full years and almost 38,000 miles out of the OE battery was not too bad, I guess.

Thanks for the advice and help!

You don't have to worry about any settings. You might have to re-select your preferred ESA settings if you have it. Maybe the clock. I would definitely use a trickle charger to keep the battery in good shape until spring, and continue to use it year round. Unless it is a BMW charger made to work with CanBus, you will need to have the pigtail attached directly to your battery.
