Does anyone know if the roads around Deals Gap are open now? I thought I read here on the forum that there were closures due to landslides. I am going to Sevierville with some bikers from Albertville and we are going right by there and I would like to ride it both ways if possible.

Jim, Don is right. The highway 129 is closed between the end of the dragon and foothills parkway. You can not get to Deals Gap on 129 from Maryville. And if you ride it from Deals Gap, you have to return to Deals Gap.Martin Benson

Here is an article from the Knoxville News Sentinel Saturday, June 5th.
A crew working to reopen U.S. 129 in the Smokies is turning to water to help topple a mass of unstable rock discovered above the roadway during drilling operations, a state Department of Transportation spokeswoman said Friday.
Workers had been drilling holes for explosives to trim unstable rock overhanging the road, which motorcyclists call "The Dragon."
TDOT spokeswoman Yvette Martinez said in a release that contractor Pacific Blasting & Demolition Ltd. "will use a water pump to saturate and lubricate the slope with water in hopes the unstable rock mass will break away from the mountainside and slide to the ground without blasting the area."
She said drilling at that site has stopped until the mass is removed, but repairs continue in other areas. Water pumping is expected to begin this weekend. According to Martinez, the unstable rock mass has moved nearly 2 feet since it was discovered and "could potentially fall at any point."
The contractor continues to drill rock bolts into more stable sections of the slope. Martinez said 11 anchors were drilled this week in more stable locations since the discovery of the unstable rock mass. Dozens of truckload of debris have been hauled away.
A large rockslide on March 14 dumped a huge amount of debris onto the highway that runs between Tallassee, Tenn., and Tapoco, N.C.
TDOT said the contractor has completed 70 percent of the project. The contractor will earn a $195,000 incentive if the roadway is opened by July 1.Martin Benson
