  • Alabama Motorcycle Licenses Plates

If I read the Alabama motor tag web site correctly...

    For my 1975 BMW R90/6 : I can get a:

    Reg. Motorcycle tag....or
A vintage plate for a motorcycle
or the 1975 Alabama motorcycle plate which was yellow that year.

Is is yellow like ole yeller the dog, or bright like yellow?

    Don,

They told me there are restrictions on the Vintage plate. They told me it could only be used in parades etc. I ride my bikes so I got the standard plate. You get a different story out of every person working at the tag office so my advice is check that out before you proceed.

Look at the photo's on the front page. John Harper had a 1974 plate on his 1974 R90S. I think that's a pretty cool option. The vintage plate is supposed to be for colectables that are original. Every one abuses it.

Bill, you are right. John Harper is familiar with this. He has done this a couple times but I am not sure about the rules for it. Norwood, you might check with him...I think you can do it!

          Bill is correct.

We all can thank John Harper for his suggestion to allow Alabamians to use "period" tags to one of his friends with a high position with the State of Alabama. His friend presented the bill to the legislature which was passed and signed by the governor in record time.

If my memory serves correctly, John has three bikes with period tags and one of them is a '75. I am meeting him Thursday and will take a photo of the tag if it is yellow, then post it on this thread.

All you need to do is find a '75 motorcycle tag, take it to the license office, and pay $1.50 (I think). You will receive a sticker with a V and the registration number.

          Good luck finding the tag.

Now that may "bring on more talk"

I like the challenge to find a Alabama 1975 tag for Motorcycle....

BTW, Bob.. I found a web page last night and it has the pictures...

After purchasing Jim's R75/6 last month, I wanted to keep the vintage tag that he had. It looked really cool. I was told by the revenue office hear in Enterprise that it can only be used for parades and shows. Too many folks were abusing the Antique/Vintage tag deal and the state cracked down. THey have been issuing citations at the local Sonic drive-in for folks that show up with their cars and vintage tags. That is very sad. She did not mention the period tag though. That is really neat.

I was told about the same thing at my Tag office...small county and the ladies that never heard of the "period tag" and the "V" sticker...they called Montgomery and told me about the same...they found their "V" stickers. They told me they would have to see the "period" tag, it had to be in good shape, no rust or holes....

I would like to know the exact number of the law for the "period tag" I found several on a search of License Plates laws and changes in the law.

BTW, I found and purchased a 1975 Alabama motorcycle tag on ebay...paid 4.99 plus S/H... the tag is in nearly new shape and I figure this guy buys the state overruns or something...he has a ton of tags for sale.

Also, I was told as the lady talked to Montgomery...parades, shows, to and from these events and I read that the vintage law says, organized vintage rides.

The local Sonic could have vintage car/bike night and loop- hole the law. I could always be headed to a bike show or in a one-bike parade

When I tagged my air heads in AL. I was told the same thing they told Steve. Since I wanted to ride them more I opted for regular tags. I put over 400 miles on my RS yesterday.

                    Hi Steve

Bummer. When I first registered my R90s for the Vintage tag, I was told the same thing, but I have never been stopped: taking a chance I guess. When I
When I registered my period tag, nothing was said about going to only vintage events.

Please send an email to me so tat I can save your new email address. I got an undeliverable message last week when I sent some e-photos.

                    Good luck finding your tag.
