  • Adopt-A-Mile??

Vernon Headrick has proposed discussion among the group that we consider participating as a club in the Adopt-A-Mile program. This of course would be where we would select a mile of roadway and then agree to keep it clean of litter on an ongoing basis.
Groups participating will receive a sign erected at that spot designating the club as the one performing this public service. The rules are easy but they do require that the job be done on a regular basis.
The point if this thread is to create a discussion about this and answer some basic questions....
    1. Are we as a club interested in the program?
    2. Are we as a club willing to fully participate ?
    3. What would be a good "mile" to sponsor?
    4. Answer comments and questions about the program as a whole.

Let me say that I think this is a good idea. The positive aspect for the club is something I think would be beneficial. I would like to see a discussion pro and con on the idea. After discussion, we can decide if in fact we want to take it on.

so....let us hear your thoughts and if YOU would commit to help with the project!

IMHO the only sensible place would be a mile stretch in front of the BMW motorcycle dealership. That is if we ever get one. That would be the only place everyone would ramble by once in a while. They might even have a dumpster on site.

Maybe the state and Feds have easied up on some regulations with this program, my business along with many others adopted a mile when the program started...we kept our mile clean as others did...then cut backs came and our collected garbage wasn't picked up as promised...then one day the state removed the adopt a mile signs saying they where violation of fed laws of signs on right of ways...fed Hwy 278 is where our mile was located...
Therefore our county adopt a mile program died...to my knowledge there are no signs remaining in the county...this week I plan to pay close attention to the roads I ride to scout out any signs....

I liked the program and the community spirit on clean up days...

Now the county with county inmates pick up the trash when it gets picked up.

Maybe a new program has come to life....hope so and would be in favour of supporting it..

A ggod mile may be somewhere close to Ditto Landing...

BTW, was by Hobbs Ferry Road yesterday the large and closest C Store is now closed..

A place with lots of visibility would be good. However, those who live close will end up taking care of it.

A mile near one of our monthly meetings would allow meeting attendee's to help at least once a year.

A mile on a great stretch of motorcycle road may encourage riders to ride to the mile and pick up trash during their visit.

If you think it's scarry riding a motorcycle with cars going by, wait till you walk a highway picking up trash. MAC may double for Milers Awareness Campaign. Where ever we choose, bright reflective clothing will be a must for safety! IMHO

After a ride and notice of the new "Pitch In " signs...the following observation...the old "Adopt a mile" signs where two posts, rather large, about 2 by 4 feet or so and the sponsor name was big enough to read. The new "Pitch In " signs are one post and about 20 by 20 inches....the sponsor name is small and at speed unable to read...you need to be walking or on a bicycle...

But having said all that...the point is to clean up a mile of roadway...the new signs are too small for passing motorist to read....much less under the meaning of the sign or program...

IMO, a waste of funds in the program....

I must agree that Alabama roadways are in need of a good cleaning, but educating the public no to throw out trash....

OK...where does most of the trash come from? hint what kind of vehicle?

I don't think it is possible to "educate" the " uneducable".How stupid and or low class do you have to be to know not to litter? Where we live is somewhat isolated, so it is tempting for the above mentioned sorry excuse for human beings to toss out their McDonalds wrappers. However, occasionally there is a piece of paper with a name and address on it. When I find this, I promptly mail it back to the low life, along with a note that isn't very nice threatening if I find any more, I will call the police. All of this is done anonymously, of course. Can you imagine opening up your mail to find trash you threw out. I personally think that the local jail occupants would be a better choice for picking up the trash than any of us. Why should we pay for them to sit in a comfy environment (to them), watch color tv, eat three meals a day while I pick up the trash they probably threw out to begin with? Climbing down off my soap box now, and back under my rock . Gail

I once was following a Mercedes in Birmingham and a well dressed man in coat and tie threw a plastic water bottle out his window. Now I doubt if he was uneducated but I'm sure he never had his butt whipped for doing something stupid when he was young. It's all about how you were raised and unfortunately a lot of the population weren't mentored well.

What a subject so dear to my heart. Several years ago two BMW friends of mine from Germany, Wolfgang and Annergret came to visit. As both of their fathers had died in WW 2, I took them to the office of the local Newspaper to get a copy for them on the German POWs that were at Ft.McClelan.

Afterwards we took our picknick lunch to enjoy by the Duck Pond nearby.

Wolfie, noticed immediately, why is all this trash from McDonalds wrappers on the ground only, three feet from a trash recapticle ?

Wolfie, best as I could reply, sometimes the worst Trash in this state is some of the people who live here.
