Final Drive Failure

I finally (no pun intended) removed and disassembled the final drive that failed on the way to Blue Springs. All went well with the disassembly. It was indeed the crown wheel bearing that failed. There was some brinelling on the inner race but the most notable damage was the complete disintegration of the cage that separates the ball bearings. I have no idea as to the cause other than the small flakes from the brinelling getting caught under the ball bearings resulting in extreme loads on the cage.

I have ordered the parts and will update when I receive them.

Hey Jamie,

Have you considered finding one that is rebuilt on Ebay? Jim had an extra for the 1150GS. It was cheaper and much easier in the long run. I am all too familiar with that as well. Uil had several iterations of the failure on his 2002RT. Good luck with the repair.

Good to hear from you Steve. I have checked around for a used rear end to no avail. The parts are only $134.00 so I think that is the best way to go.

That is cheap. Does that include the new seal as well? Uli and made a drift out of a large piece of PVC one time and a coffee can the next. It worked very well and lasted for the next 45K miles that I owned my first RT. Not the dreaded 1150

Repairs Completed

The Silver Bullet is back on the road. A few new parts, a fair amount of time, and lots of patients brought her back to life. All is well! We are now looking forward to Gulf Shores.
