Newby here from Fort Payne. I've been riding since the 70s and I'm a long time BMW admirer but I've never owned one. That is until tomorrow, maybe. I'm going to pick up a 1971 R75/5 that's been well molested by previous owners. Any specific things I might miss while the glow of motorcycle sex has my blind?

I posted this in the Airhead section but this sub-form seems to have more daily use and I'm off with the trailer tomorrow so I was hoping for a few replies. Thanks everyone.

Bring it down to Terry's Two Wheel in Pelham and Gary Nesmith can sort out any discrepancies that it might have. He makes mine purr like new.

      Good advise Jim.

Welcome to the BMW forums Oldroadie. Looking forward to meeting you sometime. The old airheads are incredible motorcycles and lots of fun to ride.

Well molested, it needs to be a cheap purchase price, $500.00 or less, preferably free to haul off, otherwise you will be stuck with unsurmountable
expensenses. Uhh, run dont walk, away.

Not so molested after all, it's better than I deserve. The ape hangers (??) are coming off but the jury's still out on the 2-1 pipe. Now to source a Bing rebuild kit w/floats so I can take it for a spin.

I have a pair of header pipes that came off of my /7. You would have to check and see if they are the same as a /5 header pipe. If they fit you may have them. They aren't perfect but the price is right. You will still need a crossover pipe and mufflers. Did the person you got if from have any of those parts he removed? You can check part numbers on line from Bob's BMW or other dealer websites that have on line catalogues

Nope, the seller only had the bike and a huge Clymer service manual and he was in way over his head. Once I got the float tangs set to the right spot it quit spewing gas everywhere. Then, after I drained whatever was in the tank and adjusted the throttle cables I got really close to hearing it idle. Too bad the battery wasn't up to it...I think it's well under the proper size for an electric start. Thanks for the pipe offer, if I can source some used silencers I might take you up on them.

Although, for 30 seconds that MAC 2-1 sounded pretty awesome
