  • A second raffle ???

A second raffle ??? ... While at the 2011 Chicken Rally, I conceived an idea for a second raffle to generate additional operating funds for the Club, - and then, at the end of the year, 100% of unused funds could be donated to Charity. I sought contributions from Motorcycle related vendors, and had responses of a $150.00 Gift Card from RevZilla, and a $100.00 Gift Certificate from Wonderlich. These donations were to be at NO cost to the Club. I had hoped that it would have been possible to start selling these raffle tickets at the Barber Superbike Classic last weekend, BUT there were a couple snags that needed a club vote. The bigger snag was a request from RevZilla to place a link on our BMWMOAL.org Club Page in exchange for their $150.00 Gift Card Donation. I personally am OK with that,as that will cost us Zero to do, and it would be for a defined period of one year. We can also post the comment "Thank you to RevZilla for their generous donation to our Club" along with the link to indicate that the link is a thank you, and not preferential product advertising. ... The second snag was that some felt that a Charity should be named on the tickets. I disagree ~ as my initial goal was to raise funds for the club to cover future expenses - such as a possible $500.00 tent fee at the next Barber Vintage Bike Fest, or the next Barber Superbike Classic. If at the end of the year there were excess funds, - then of course we should donate to the charity of the Clubs choosing. At this point, if we're to name a specific charity, I recommend that we name the Barber Motorsports Museum in Leeds, AL as the named charity, as I believe that a simple donation from this raffle would go a VERY long way toward getting a waiver from Barbers in their demand for a vendor fee for us to have a presence at any future event. We had great success with our presence at last years Vintage Bike Fest, and I believe that we should have a presence at each significant motorcycle related event that Barber's should ever host. We sold over 300 motorcycle raffle tickets at last years Vintage Bike Fest, - and with 34,000 spectators at the recent Superbike Classic, I believe we could have easily sold 300 to 500 (or more!) lesser priced $3.00 tickets for these gift card/certificates that cost our Club absolutely nothing. If any club member wanted to try to sell tickets between this Superbike Races and the fall Vintage Bike Fest, then that would be optional, - but I believe the second bulk of sales would be at the Vintage Bike Fest, - with the drawing on Sunday at the close of that event. If we matched the average estimate of 400 tickets per event, for a total of 800 tickets, and assume other club members sold only a couple hundred more, that would be about 1,000 tickets at $3.00 each, for a total of $3,000.00 to cover any future Club expenses, and then donate ALL of the unused expenses to the Clubs chosen charity. ... We've missed the train on getting this thing going and being able to take advantage of the massive amount of potential ticket buyers that were at the Superbike Classic, but with the exception of the cost to print the tickets, this would be all fund raiser and no cost to the club (unlike the motorcycle raffle we have at the Chicken Rally.)

As this is considered, I think it would be wise for everyone to remember that raffles are illegal in the state of Alabama. The state attorney general's office has never aggressively enforced this law, but we probably don't want to draw their attention.
