I have a bad valve stem on the front tire of my 1150 RT. Any advise anyone? It appears that the wheel will have to be removed! Even that baffles me. Can someone advise me??? Please!

My advice is replace it with a metal valve stem. Probably should replace the rear one also as there have been many reports of defective stems from BMW. I had one that was a catastrophic failure (all the air came out at once due to separation of the rubber from the metal in the stem).
Actually the tire does not have to be removed, just deflated and broken from the rim to gain access to the valve stem hole on the inside.Last edited by Bikebum; 07-02-2011, 11:11 AM.Jamie

This is Ron again. I had no idea what I was getting into!! Terry Two Wheels is not available. And, I can fine NO ONE willing to replace the valve on my wheel. BTW, it is off my BMW and in the trunk of my car. I even went to a Harley shop. They refused me, because my bike is a BMW.Comment

How badly do you need it fixed. If you can't wait for Terry to get back and you can get it to Huntsville, John can get a valve stem in it.Comment

Ron,
Just break the bead, a bench vice or big C clamp will do. Stick a new stem in from the back. I had to lever one side of the tire off on mine to get enough clearance to get the old stem out and the new one in. Mark you tire and rim so you can seat it back close to where it was so as not to effect the balance. I use the rubber ones because I have read on some forums that the metal stems don't fit the BMW wheels properly. I had a valve stem failure on the front last year, the rubber came apart from the metal core. I think that I was wiggling it around too much and checking pressure too often. I am backing off on my checking some now. I was lucky and it happened near a friend's house and he was able to trailer me home.

Wow, what great response on this site! Beemers really ARE special!! Well, it turns out I goofed!! Apparently when I removed the axle, a spacer fell and was forever gone. I didn't realize this at first. Finally I knew something was wrong; I couldn't center the wheel in the fork!!!! With the help of Terry's, I have ordered one. It should arrive next Tuesday. And, really, THANKS EVERYONE!!!!!!Comment
