  • Extra Gas Containers

Starting my roadtrip up to Michigan on Friday. The last time I took this trip, my gas light went on WAAAAY TOO MANY TIMES and at times had me PRAYING for that next gas station to appear ASAP. At one time I thought I saw people carrying gas in one of those 1-litre aluminum containers that are now available for water. Can those still be used or does it need to have a vent?

The one litter aluminum containers can be used...sold at Target, Dick's sporting and other outdoor....does not need to be vented...it will have a rubber sealing gasket. Most denote for using fuel.

However, personally I would keep out of direct sunlight and heat.
Only store the fuel for the trip and then empty into the fuel tank at end of trip.

Good safety net for a trip as you mentioned...

    Have a good safe ride!

Don't fill completely: allow just a bit of room for expansion. I use a few small 20 Oz MSR bottles. Seems having a few small bottles are easier to pack. Bought them at Gander Mtn.

I use mine for trail riding. I can't see why these would be needed out on the road unless you're riding an HD with peanut tank.

Terese the fuel bottle mentioned above will work just fine. I believe they are a little thicker than a water bottle. It always makes me a little nervous carrying fuel, but it sure gives you a feeling of confidence just knowing you have extra gas, if need be. Have a safe trip! Gail

Should have at least a safe 200 mile range...

When I did quite a bit of the LD riding with Uli, back a few years ago, we simply carried a one gallon gas can. The cheap red on with built in vent. Worked just fine.

              That Guzzi looks awesome!

I keep a 1-liter MSR fuel bottle in my top box for 'just in case' times. I am not good about using it regularly so to keep the fuel from turning bad too quickly I put a small bit of Stabil in the bottle.
It came in handy once while pushing the limit too far with no gas station around.

It's all been a good trip so far - no gas worries. Those camelbacks sure do come in handy with this heat. Had a couple traffic jams but was able to skirt down the right shoulder to get around it. Hate to do it , but the bike can't handle just sitting there in the heat One of my classmates was hit on his bike (by someone making a left-hand turn ) while heading to my class reunion. Fortunately he only received a broken ankle. Sure hope he wasn't "my sacrafice" to the accident demons....

Oh and by the way... I'm HOME. Had a locked-up kickstand but was able to get to an automotive shop for some lube and it came down - WHEW!!! No need for extra gas cans on this trip.
