A quick review on at dps.alabama.gov indicates that there is a written test (no drivers or skill test) requirement to get the "m" endorsement on your operator's license in Alabama. They have a review pamplet available on line through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. I believe that we have several instructors in the club and they may be better able to answer your question.
I got my motorcycle license at 14 and it was great because it looked just like the regular driver's license. It was useful in getting into those restricted movies back then, but I regress. Later when I got my operators license the motorcycle endorsement carried over so I don't remember having to take any additional tests.
Jeff, you are correct. Currently in Alabama all you have to do is pass a written test...no skills test or riding training required. Personally I do not think that is a healthy thing and would highly recommend an MSF course for both new and returning riders! Those classes are a great value and are available in Montevallo at the Traffic Safety Center as well as other sites around the state. The spring classes will begin soon!
