They use bots (other computers without human intervention) to attempt to guess passwords. Several years ago I implemented various methods to thwart these bad guys, one of which is to freeze logins for a specific username if 5 login failures have been encountered. The only advice I can give is to make sure you have a secure and complex password. Considering that only 5 attempts can be made every 15 minutes, it may take years to guess your password (and they usually give up when locked out the first time) but if you really have a very simple password your account could be compromised.
