  • "Southernisms"

Don't you just love the ways of expressing oneself in our Southern USA?
One day a few months ago, a friend and I were passing time by chatting with each other about high-level philosophy...like what other people know. Her comment was "If you don't know what you don't know, how are you gonna know any better? Ponder on that a moment while I give another example of "Southernisms".
In the Mississippi Delta (it's an area of north MS, but spoken of as if it's a Place)...someone said to me: "Raise the window down" HUH? Could that have come from the days when we propped the window up with a stick and had to raise it to take the stick out to let the window down? I'm guessing some of you remember those days.
Enough....I'm fixin' to get another cup of coffee.

Don't know what language you people are speaking but all I want to do is "pass a good time cher" that is after I finish making groceries and fixing the hot water heater.

The funny part is, I understood it all! However, I have learned that - sometimes...depending on what part of the country you are in, it is better to just keep my mouth shut . You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl.

Is Malvene the only person that ever says "all y'all"? For instance, if she is taking a group photo she may say "all y'all stand over here". It completely baffles the Canadians.

It makes perfect sense to me. Why waste your breath when you can just run it all together and get your point across? Gail

"[I]All Y'all"[I] is a LOT more pleasing to hear than "Youse Guys", and the great thing about "Y'all" is that it can be singular or plural.
