  • Hmmmm...where should we go?

We are fortunate enough to have some very well traveled riders in our club that have ridden all over the globe. Well, I have always heard it is OK to dream....so with that in mind, if you could go anywhere on a motorcycle trip...where would you go? I have also heard that if you are going to dream...dream big!!

I want to go to South Africa...how 'bout you? So let's hear it!

I'm with you Bob. I've been riding in AL for years, but every time I think I've been on the best roads, I learn about yet another close to home - usually in the company of other club members. At the club meeting Vance was showing me a mountaintop circle near Leeds, just off a road John and I took a few weeks go.

And, yes, I'd love to go back to Alaska!

A couple of weeks in Ireland and Scotland would be nice.

I am looking at South Africa this fall...big trip to BIG game country. Looks like it would be really fun. Ireland or Spain / Portugal would also be high on my list!

You are right Gator...Alaska = Awesome!

Sanford, I have lived in AL all of my life, save 15 years and have traveled it quite extensively in that time...but as we are all aware...just follow Martin around Alabama to go where you ain't never been! We are blessed with great roads and places to explore here in our state...but if you take the time to look around...wherever you are that is most often the case!

          Ride...ON!

To me it doesn't count if you go in any other way than a motorcycle. NOTHING compares to adventure on two wheels. I want to go to Alaska and ride ALL THE WAY and BACK. Then there are several places in the States I want to see. Before I die, I would like to take one really big, daring adventure kinda risking it all to just see what I'm made of ... I think I know and it ain't good.

Gail, I think you are exactly right. Riding there and taking that challenge on a big trip is absolutely part (and a BIG part)of the attraction for me. Having done several big trips the one thing that seems to be a common occurrence is having to move too fast and me trying to cram too much in too little time. I have noticed that you and Paul really enjoy going but going at a pace you want to move with no real deadlines for returning at a particular time...and that is awesome indeed. Norwood is another one that enjoys this luxury, he refers to it as "flower sniffin'". Maybe one day I will be able to roam and roam with no set schedule....it hasn't happened yet...at least not on one of my bigger trips. I guess until that time comes I will have to sit back and watch you guys do it...I will be jealous but I will enjoy that too! I say, plan the trip and set sail! I am sure you won't regret it!

While dreaming of the Stelvio Pass, a fun day ride is to pull out of my driveway and take all right turns until getting lost, then regroup. Any ride that puts a smile on your face and lightens the heart is a big ride. Now, let's see....where did I put that file on riding the eastern seaboard.........

                  Hey John,

Unless you are getting younger every year, make your dream about Stelvio ( the sooner the better) a reality. It's so easy to do and not that expensive relatively speaking. Going to the Alps for a motorcycle tour has been for me less expensive than traveling in the US. Best times to go are in the months of June and September. First thing to do is get John Herman's book, "The Alps and Corsica" (latest edition). When you make the decision to go, order the software from Garmin for you GPS. I'll send you my favorite routes and places to stay.

                  Bon Voage

John, not all old dreamers are old procrastinators :-). My senior friend, Phillip Warren, went with me two times and his memory of our trips is so good, that when he talks about it, I wonder if I was there. Don't talk to him unless you want more sleepless nights :-). Don't talk to Ron Shea, another two timer, either.

Vance, how far have you gotten in your planning for a S.A. trip? Let's talk...I've got connections to a motorcycle outfitter in South Africa. I was thinking of going in October if it works into the rest of our travel plans this year.
