  • It's happened again

Well it looks like it has happened again. While checking the tires on the GS Saturday morning I spun the back wheel and heard sort of grinding noise from the rear drive. There was also a little more than normal side play when I shook the wheel. I had sort of felt a vibration in the pegs last Saturday when we rode to the shop in B.R. I trailered to the shop this morning and left it for Cory to check but it seems like something in the rear drive is failing. He called about an hour agao and said that with a discount they would replace the entire rear drive as a unit for about $1700.00 including labor. He said that they have not had any real success at rebuilding them in the past because the ones that they have done have failed again within a short time. I've got 47,000 miles + on the odometer. My RT had 48,500 when the rear drive failed on it. I've bought three BMWs and two of them have rear drive failures. Two out of three doesn't seem like a coincidence. Lub my BMW, lub my BMW, lub my BMW.

Wow...sorry to to hear this Gator. I have had two failures as well, the first one at 48K and the second one 21.5K. Word on the street is that they have it under control...my last failure was on my 2010....guess I should go shopping....

Good luck buddy, if there is a silver lining at least it happened at home and not on the road. They repaired my last one under warranty but I have yet to collect the $500 out of pocket it cost me to fly home and go back to get it.....

Only a small percentage failure rate according to BMW but when it's yours that fails it's pretty much 100%. Well at least I'll have another 2 year warranty on the rear drive. Not feeling very lucky right now. This is why I don't buy lottery tickets, I just increase the total for the winner.
