            Very interesting. I guess there was only one area code in Alabama then. I don't remember when that changed.

              Google tells me that the second area code for AL was added in 1995...seems like yesterday doesn't it?

                That's about the time that cell phones were really becoming popular. I'm sure that was the reason for it.

                  Jim, the reason for the additional area codes is because Bellsouth was running out of telephone numbers for Alabama.
