  • Interesting Harley Story

    A little history!

I've made some Harley friends in Satsuma, AL. They are constantly busting me about my BMW's. With their loud pipes there is no shortage of testosterone with these guys. They are always telling me how bad there bikes are and how they can run my BMW in the ground. I just smile and ask them if a peice of humble pie I plan to serve them will bother them much.

Will the other day they came to me an asked about a road they heard of between Monroeville and Camden called HWY 41. I smiled and said I think its a good MC road and that I thought I had ridden it once. They even asked me to lead the ride!

I led them up the insterstate to HWY 225 over to Stockton then HWY 59 north to HWY 21 to Monroeville. I then stopped for a riders meeting. I told them them to ride their own ride because I was going to pick up the pace a bit. I invited them to follow if they wanted and if they wanted a slower pace I'd see for lunch at the BBQ/Sole Food place in Camden. All of the testosteone crowd started checking air pressure etc. I just smiled and watched because I had done all that stuff at home.

We snaked out of Camden behind a pickup. At the first oppurtunity I passed the truck and set up a pace I was comfortable with. Now I have to admit I expected some competition. It took me all of 3-4 minutes to put enough distance between them and me so I couldn't even see their head lights. Its 40 miles to Camden. I got to the BBQ place and went in and talked to them about serving 30 or so folks. I went back to my bike. In what seemed like an iternity (probably 5-7 minutes) 2 new Victories came screeching in asking me how long I had been there and how fast I had rode that old BMW. I just smiled and said fast enough to get here before you.

For the rest of the day all bragging stopped and I had many folks looking ever my bike every time we stopped and took a break.

Now I had anticipated this so I had ridden my R1100RTL that's 12 years old. If this happens again I plan on riding my R90/6. Even a 33 year BMW can put it on any Harley or Victory.

They sound bad, but must can't break 100 mph. Most put loud pipes on, but don't remap their injection? Very few carburated Harleys exsist down here.

I'm not impressed with anything but my BMW's and I have a new respect for them.

Great story Tim...I am chuckling right now. The other thing is it sounds like you guys had LONG day for the cruiser guys too. I imagine some may have been "sore" by days end!
Hey, the good thing about it is there is room for all of us!

Yes it was 247 miles round trip.

The Victory Boys with an oil cooled motor and 85 hp were the only ones in the hunt, and I put at least 5 minutes on them in 40 miles. They found out the hard way that older BMW's can go fast with the right rider, and by the way they are pretty comfortable to. As we all know they are pretty good all around bikes.

Now if we could just get BMW to admit they have a rear drive unit problem on some bikes. It frustrates the hell out of me that they have stuck their head in the sand and will not admit they have a design problem. Until they do I will be hard pressed to buy a new one.

I love those old Air Heads more every day.

I enjoyed your Harley story Tim. Being a reformed Harley guy (old dogs can learn new tricks), having had pretty much the same attitude, I can really appreciate what your feelings are about the Harley "cockieness".

Capt'n Pecker gave me my first good lesson while on his K1100 LT when he kept increasing his speed all the while watching me in his rear view mirror. By the time we got up to 90, he could see my Ultra Classic starting to weave, then he rolled on his Beemer and disappeared over the horizon. I can imagine the big grin on his face was much like yours.

Looking forward to seeing you this weekend.
