Or more accurately, they found me. I was mowing the barnyard this morning when I felt a pain in my arm. I looked down and a bee was stinging my arm. I brushed it off and continued mowing but I was watching carefully for more bees. On the next pass I saw what looked like a scene from a science fiction movie; a black swarm emerging from the ground. I got the heck outta Dodge and retrieved the wasp and hornet spray. I used half a can and killed the ones that were at the entrance, but others were occasionally crawling up past their dead comrades (see the photo below). Since I was out of bug spray, I poured about a quart of diesel fuel down the hole, but that just made them angry. One by one they emerged from the nest and flew off. I counted more than 50 and they were still coming. I poured another gallon of diesel fuel down the hole and that seemed to do the trick.
Watch out for those things. A couple of stings really hurt, but 100 could be deadly.
