I've had my eye on BMW bikes for MANY years and I just made a deal to purchase one. Barring something freaky I'll be the owner of a 96 R1100RT by this time tomorrow.
I did get the bike, Attached is a photo from the shop, the color isn't right in the photo, its really a dark copper color. I had one unfortunate incident when I hit the button on the front strap holding it down on the trailer, apparently the guy who strapped it down had jacked down the forks and it jumped up and fell over. It fell on to the wooden part of the trailer railing thankfully so it didn't bust up the fiberglass but it did knock a chunk of paint off. Lesson #1 learned.
After that I cranked it up and took it out for about a 45 mile ride, did some curvies and a little open road. The first impression was how you can hit 70 in fourth and the engines still really just loafing along and quiet. which is of course very different from what I've had. But certainly what I've been looking for, my second impression is that I need some risers, so if anyone has a suggestion for that I'd be thankful. I didn't have time to go through the manual yeasterday, I'm hoping the previous owner documented the service work but if not I'll be looking to adjust the valves this winter. I've seen photo's from work day gatherings so I would love to have you guys assist me through that procedure. I'm usually ok to do most service work once someone has guided me through it once.
additionally I've got to figure out a good place to mount the GPS, any suggestions welcome there as well.
I seem to be having issues replying to your posts. I'll try again. I did get the bike and have it home. I do have numerous questions to ask when I get this forum thing worked out. I've filled out the membership form and it will be in the mail shortly. I also work near the place they have the Birmingham meetings so I'll be swinging by there.
My name is Walter, but my friends call me "slammer", No big story behind the name, an old riding buddy of mine started calling me that because I used it on the delphi forums and the name just stuck. I live in Argo which is near Trussville and Work near Hoover.
I took the bike out today and stretched its legs a bit, I actually was late for an event Sunday and had to hit it real good on the interstate for a bit and was real impressed with how effortlessly it handles the more frisky interstate runs. It seems to be running a bit smoother now that I've put down about 150 miles on it. I'm not sure how long it had been sitting prior to me buying it.
Walter, there seems to be a problem with the web site private message service. Send me an e-mail directly to the address on page 12 of any newsletter. I don't put my address on this site because the darn web crawlers pick it up.

Jamie - I have performed multiple tests on the Private Messaging service this evening and cannot find anything wrong. If most people are like me, they don't realize that they have a private message to read. By default, a user is not notified via email or a pop-up box when a new private message is received. They must look in the upper right hand corner of the screen to see if they have any messages as shown below:
To turn on email notifications and pop-up notifications, go to User CP > Settings & Options > Edit Options and place a check next to Receive Email Notifications of New Private Messages and next to Show New Private Message Notification Pop-Up as shown below:
After making the change, scroll to the bottom and click save changes.
If anyone is experiencing problems with Private Messaging, please let me know.
