  • Number of waypoints limitation GPS units.

I have read a number of comments here concerning waypoint limitations of GPS units, specifically that the Zumo and 276c are limited to 50 waypoints. I checked the Garmin web site and found the Zumo can store 500 waypoints/favorites/locations and the 276c can store 3,000 waypoints/favorites/locations. My 2610 can store 500 waypoints/favorites/locations so I was surprised when the All Around Alabama 2008 route with only 213 waypoints did not fully load (was truncated) because the waypoint memory was full. What I discovered was that waypoints never go away unless you explicitly delete them (a new waypoint will not overwrite an existing waypoint even if the existing waypoint is not used in a route). My GPS still had every waypoint created since I bought it in 2004. I deleted every waypoint in my unit and then all 213 waypoints from the route loaded successfully with 287 to spare. The complete route was still truncated because of a limitation of what I estimate to me around 400 turns for each route (The complete route had 428 turns).

I split the single route into two routes and then downloaded both routes successfully to my 2610. Since both routes are loaded into the 2610 at the same time, I can run the entire route without reloading my GPS.

    A few Notes:

o Before I deleted all waypoints from my GPS, I uploaded them to my PC in case I wanted to retrieve and reload some of them later.

o I did not delete the waypoints one at a time. On my 2610 I used the "FIND" button and selected "Waypoints" and when all waypoints were displayed on the screen I used the "MENU" button and selected "Delete All" and all waypoints that were not used in a route were deleted and then I had the option to delete waypoints even if they WERE used in a route.

o All Garmin units that I checked the specifications can store at least 500 waypoints/favorites/locations. Possibly the 50 limit referenced above is the number of routes that can be stored. My unit is limited to 50 routes.

o If you receive routes from another person (you did not create them on your PC), it is a good idea to recalculate them using MapSource before loading them to your GPS unit. This will ensure that the maps will be compatible and will avoid routing errors if your maps are a different revision than the maps used when the file was originally created.

o This procedure worked on my 2610 - YMMV.

I certainly learned something from this exercise. Hopefully someone else will benefit also.

My Garmin, a Quest 2, would not even load the entire All Around Alabama route. I went through it on my PC and carefully deleted waypoints, one at a time until the route segment recalculated. I then did an 'edit', 'undo' and the last deleted waypoint and original route were re-generated. I did this process along the entire route and was left with the route as originally laid out and a total of 66 waypoints. My Quest still did not like that leading me to believe there is a limitation of somewhere around 50 waypoints per route, though I have not been able to find that in any documantation. I now have the entire route divided into 3 roughly equal sections, all loaded into the
GPS and available for use consecutively. All I need now is some warm weather and longer days.

      Dave,

I believe you have hit the nail on the head. I didn't consider "waypoints per route". That spec isn't always listed on Garmin's web page.

I found a couple web pages that stated the Quest 2 would handle 50 "waypoints per route" and another stated it would handle 254 "waypoints per route".

My 2610 is either 250 "waypoints per route" (starting at firmware version 3.40) or fully automatic (uses how ever many it needs for a route).

The only way to be for sure is to try it.

        Steve,
My 267c manual sez 300 waypoints to a route. bob caall Garmin, they told him 50 waypoints per route for both Zumo and 276C. You are right on the total number waypoints the units are able to store, 3000 in my case on the 276C, but the limitation is onthe number per route. As we now have the All-around Alabama file with 5 routes there should be no problem for any of the newer Garmin units (don't know about the GPSV). You can download the 5 routes file to your computer then load the entire file to you GPS and activate each route as you get to that point. In no case should you have to stop and reload your GPS from a computer. When I went to Alaska this past summer I had over 30 routes in my 276C and activated them as I needed them, basically a new one every day or so.
I am continuing this discussion under teh GPS Tips thread.

          Steve,

Thanks for those links. That is the first time I have ever seen the 50 waypoints per route limitation anywhere.
