  • Negatives associated w/ anti-seize on sparkplugs?

    In July's ON magazine in an article about getting airheads ready for the riding season the author stated that he did not recommend anti-seize on spark plugs. I have been pulling a little on my bikes plugs and in my car also because it has an aluminum head. Any evidence of problems related to anti-seize that we should be aware of?

    I have done it for many years without any negative effects. Prior to using antiseize I did manage to twist off a stubborn, rusted plug in a flat head ford. Not fun.

    However, after reading the article and reading instructions from NGK concerning plug installation, I just installed some new NGK iridium plugs in my LT without any antiseize. NGK says that their plugs have a plating on the threads that resists seizing. We'll see. I hope I have done the right thing. Here is the NGK technical bulletin:

      Thanks, Makes sense, Beemer Boneyard sent me NGKs with their 24K package. My bad on the issue, it was actually June on page 29. It says"I do not use it (anti-seize) on splines or spark plugs!"

        Jeff, I really think my LT runs smoother since I installed the NGK Iridium plugs. Up until now I have always used the Bosch twin gap plugs that they sell at BMW parts counters. Also, according to NGK, I should be able to extend the replacement intervals by threefold or more; We'll see.

          Do note the statement NGK makes says they "resist" seizing....
          Leaving them in longer raises the possibility of seizing. I'd suggest you take them out for a look see once in a while to further lower the seizing opportunities. IMHO.
          It never hurts to correctly gap plugs onece in a while, unless they are the platinum non changable type, which those irridium ones may be....?, I dunno.
          Also be aware that washing your engine off increases the likelyhood of spark plug seizing as the water increases corossion.
