Sorry to hear about that Ian. Been there, done that as well (a few times I might add). I did not tell the wife about the ribs, or the Army about the accident when it happened in 04 but man the ribs hurt lilke hell for several months. I hope your recovery is speedy.

Thanks very much for the well wishes... things are going along better than expected as far as ribs go, but I'll know the total extent of the pain *after* the insurance guy tells me what they're going to cover.

While riding home from Morton's BMW Spring Fling in Virginia last weekend, I hit a really weird spot on the road... NC209 6 miles south of Hot Springs. This was after 350+ miles of twisty country roads with questionable pavement all over.

If I had seen this bump, I am sure I could have hit it and not given it a second thought. But since I was unaware of it's presence, it caught me out.

Does anyone know what might cause a road to have a hole like this in it?





it *appears* to be a hole in the road that was taken like a core sample -- as if an engineer wanted to know the condition of the road bed beneath the pavement -- and then not properly refilled. As traffic passed over it, and perhaps erosion from rain occurred, the pavement surrounding it collapsed to make a conical depression about 12" in diameter and 6-8" deep.

Others on the BMW MOA forum have confirmed my suspicion... road engineers take pavement samples like this for analysis and then theoretically patch them.

the hole is really hard to see while riding, and in the pics it's hard to see how deep it is, which is why I hit it while heeled over to the left and now have 5 ribs broken in 9 places. :cry

Wow from the looks of the bike and gear in the pictures you're lucky that's all you broke. That's some bad looking rocks. Hope the ribs heal quickly.

Doesn't look even close to hole that would bring a bike down.
Just thinking out loud here.....Are you sure about your tire inflation and suspension adjustments ? Ever check your sag ? Is your damping adjusted appropriately for your spring preload ?

i had just ridden over 1k miles that weekend. if i had seen the hole, i could have hit it and stayed up.

i've got over a half million miles on beemers, probably half or more on twisty roads, many in horrendous conditions, many unpaved.

you need to go out and look at that hole before making a judgement, as pics don't do it justice.

I wasn't making a judgement, just speculating on cause.

Everything up to snuff ? I'd suggest the air shock having practically no rebound damping is a significant high order fault. That parameter would certainly effect the rear wheels ability to track the front end properly and thereby upset the chasis. The front end would then likely be upset by feedback through the chasis from the rear tracking fault.

I've had broken ribs. Not fun. Hope you're doing well Ian and have your bike back up to snuff in short order.

Bike was totaled but the good news is that I found another that was even more nicely farkeled than the one I had.... *with* an Ohlins rear shock.

I'll be over at Cruso this saturday afternoon.... on the bike.
