  • Don and Barbara Little

Don and Barbara returned to Birmingham, following the meeting at Nauvoo, expecting to fly out Monday to pick up their Sprinter (Toy Hauler) in Los Angeles. However, when they reached Birmingham, Barbara received a call that her father is critically ill and his condition is declining. Don and Barbara quickly cancelled their travel plans and decided to return to their home in Clayton. They rode in rain the entire way and when they made the turn onto the unpaved road that leads to their house, the bike skidded and went down. Barbara was thrown clear but Don was pinned by the bike. Barbara got help from a nearby house, got the bike off Don, and called for an ambulance.

The ambulance transported Don to Flowers hospital in Dothan for emergency care. It appears that Don has suffered a spiral break of his lower right leg that is very similar to the damage that he had to his left leg in an earlier mishap. He will have surgery today to realign and repair the bone.

In addition to his injury, Don and Barbara are quite stressed at this time due to the uncertainty of her father's condition.

Please keep Don and Barbara in your prayers.

As an update, I just talked with Barbara and Don has come out of recovery and is being placed in a room. As it turns out the break as not a spiral break after all but a ragged fracture. The surgeon placed a "nail" in the core of the tibia and secured it with screws; Barbara said that the fibula was broken in so many little pieces that they just left it alone to re-knit naturally.

Also Barbara said that they now think her father has a kidney or bladder infection and are fighting that with antibiotics. If that is the case, he may see improvement by late tonight.

This report is somewhat good news but continue your prayers.

Phillip and I are definitely in our thoughts and prayers for Don's recovery and for Barbara with the road that is ahead of them both. They were so excited about the sprinter van at the Nauvoo Club Meeting, so sorry it hasn't worked out, but Don's recovery back to health is much more important.

Thank you Jamie for telling us about Don and Barbara's unfortunate get off. Thank goodness Don's broken fibula was not a spiral brake. Also thankfully Barbara was not hurt and that her dad is better than they first thought. Kathy's and my prayers are with them.

Don has been released from the hospital this afternoon. Barbara is in Georgia at her dad's house and has the truck, which is a straight shift (Don can't drive it because of the leg). The brakes are out on their Outback so Don was sorta stuck at the hospital. Sheila Kalahan has come to the rescue and is transporting Don to her house for TLC.

Barbara's father has pneumonia and has shown no improvement at this time. Continue with your prayers.

Malvene just talked to Don and learned that Barbara's father succumbed to pneumonia at around seven-thirty pm. Barbara was at his bedside when he passed away. Details of funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.

Don has settled in at Jim and Sheila's and will see the doctor again next Wednesday. (I previously reported that would happen Friday). He now has a Robert Jones Bandage and will get a cast at that time.
