  • Bob Metzl in NICU

    Bob started having seizures during the night. Glen (his brother) was staying with him and thankfully heard him. He said that Bob stared at him with big eyes and didn't recognize him. That's when he called 911. Bob's been in the Huntsville Hospital NICU since this morning. I saw him tonite with Glen and it was hard to tell if he knew us - hardly any response, although he did open his eyes every once in awhile. The doctor said that a tumor in the brain had 'leaked blood'. It doesn't take a lot to cause damage. Right now we don't know the prognosis. He's on Dilantin and that's getting him groggy, plus the nurse said that people tend to sleep alot after a seizure. Will keep you posted as things progress. Please keep Sweet Ol Bob in your prayers.

      Maureen saw Bob last nite at the 8:30p visit. He was coming in and out of awareness.

      FROM MAUREEN....
      "When he was aware:
      I asked if he was in pain, he said no.
      I asked if he had a headache, he said no.
      I said to him he probably had a bunch of thoughts in his head but could not say them right then, and he said yes.

      He is getting some pain medicine (DILANTIN(?) and a saline drip).

      Glen [Bob's brother] spoke with the doctor who told him that the tumor and blood vessels had bled and caused pressure on his brain which had caused the seizure. [NOTE: Found out tht it doesn't take a lot of blood to bleed into the brain to make it go haywire - t.] The doctor told Glen that things were pretty up in the air and that currently Bob was pretty much that way that he would be unless he got better. Do doctors know anything?"

      I spoke with Glen this morning and he said that the doctor said that it didn't look that good.

      We're preparing for the worse....

          A Better Day for Our Sweet Ol Bob

          Just got done with the 1:30 visit. He's awake and alert. He doesn't remember anything from the last day and a half. They may be moving him to a regular room tomorrow, fingers crossed. Bob has approx 7 to 8 inoperable tumors upstairs - anything can happen at anytime. I guess now it's wait and see. He's recuped before just about when we were ready to count him out. I'm thankful he's decided to stick around a while longer. Glen and family have asked me to tell you how much they've appreciated the calls, visits and prayers.

            Friday Morning Bob Report

            From Glen, Bob's brother.....
            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            The AM news:
            Bob's doing VERY well, they're moving him to room 752 in an hour or so... He seems to have regained most, if not all, of his memory, and his motor coordination skills, etc., seem to be improving. If only he didn't have cancer, things would be great....
              While at the Huntsville hospital visiting Tony, I stopped by Bob's room (752). I do not know Bob, but thought it may help his spirits if some fo the club members checked in on him. He was being visited by 4 o fhis co-workers and he seem in good spirits. He said he felt a lot better than yesterday.
                I'm glad to hear Bob is doing better, and I hope he continues to improve. I always thought he was a nice guy. That was nice of you to visit him Gary, even if you didn't know him. Gail
                  BOB UPDATE
                  He's stabilized and in good spirits. He's starting to walk a little. His taste buds are hurting, but unfortunately they're watching what he eats. Still no word on release. Many thanx for visits, calls and prayers.
                    From Bob's Brother Glen - Sunday Nite Update....
                    Well, Bob didn't make it out of here today, they're keeping him here overnight for observation because he evidently had a little blood in his urine... Don't know if it's from catheter removal or what, but they're not taking chances... He should get out of here tomorrow, though. He's not hooked up to the saline solution anymore either.
                    Dr. Gualtieri was here (late), got the results of his last MRI - wasn't good, showed more tumors & he told us that Bob wasn't a candidate for the advanced treatment at Vanderbilt... He recommended Hospice care, etc. Bob knows it, Gualtieri told it to Bob directly. Bob seems to be resigned to it, but I know this is a deep psychological setback for him...
                    Just going to have to take this day by day, and hope for the best each and every day...
                      Bob is Back at Home!
                      Doctor released him today. He's still very weak. Brother Glen and Bob's son, David, are currently staying with him. On the down side, Bob's noggin tumors continue to grow. He's not in pain which is very thankful.
                      Thank you for your prayers, visits and calls.
