I just spoke with Stephen. He is here at UAB and is recovering from his accident that occured last Thursday night. He was returning to Foley from Pensacola where he had played in a concert.
Apparently he was a victim of the all to familiar "left turn". A vehicle made a left turn in front of him and he said that he attempted to avoid the collision but couldn't. He had swerved left left so contact was made on his right side. He was wearing his full face helmet and jacket but no riding pants. He has suffered a broken pelvis (front and back) as his worst injury. Other than that a little road rash from his unarmored pants but nothing too serious.
He was the third motorcycle accident victim that day in Pensacola and coincidently all three suffered pelvic injuries. He was transfered on Friday up to UAB in Birmingham and surgery was done on Saturday.
He tells me he stood up yesterday but will not be allowed to put weight on his left leg for three months. He has support from his three brothers at least one of which is in Sylacauga. He thinks he will be here in Birmingham about a week. After that he will go to his parents house in Opp, AL for further recovery.
He seems to be in pretty good spirits but does have a sore throat from the tubes inserted. He is in room #8204 and you may direct dial him at 205.996.7204. I am sure he would be pleased to hear from you via cards or maybe a call. He was uncomfortable talking after about 5 min so keep that in mind.Current Bikes

I went by UAB and visited Stephan for a while today. He has suffered quite a bit of damage to his pelvis but the surgery has been done and the prognosis is good. There will be a period of several months for healing. The most important part of this is that his spirits are very high. If they did not have his legs so contorted, and he didn't have the road rash, it would be hard to tell that he is so badly injured. He said he really regretted not being able to come to Huntsville for he had just bought camping gear and it was to be his and his son's first motorcycle campout.
I think his positive attitude and lighthearted nature will have him on the mend before we know it. With all the joking going on I told him it was a shame that no one brought his saddle with him so the surgeons could just rework him to fit it better.
His parents were there but were going back home in the afternoon; and no they were not fussing about him riding a motorcycle - his dad still rides a Harley and appeared to be about my age.
Stephen will have to remain in the hospital for about a week so I know he will appreciate your calls, cards, visits. Please show him your support.
BTW, room #8204 is in the North Hospital Annex.Jamie

I just talked with Stephen five minutes ago and it seems they are letting him out today. Two of his younger brothers are there and they will take him to his parents house to stay the summer in Opp , AL.
He is out for the summer since school is out so at least the recovery period is during a time that will not interfere with work. It'll be about 12 weeks recovery before he can put weight on the left foot.
He's in good spirits.

Well that is good to hear! We expected him to be here for about another week. I know he will be glad to at least get somewhere but there! It's nice and all but you know.......Originally posted by bamabmw View PostI just talked with Stephen five minutes ago and it seems they are letting him out today. I just talked with Stephen. He is at his parents home in Opp, AL., and resting comfortably. It is remarkable how he is coping with this accident. The doctors told him it will be 12 weeks of healing before he will be back up. However, I think it may be sooner than that due to his very positive attitude. Boredom will probably be his greatest enemy, so shoot him an e-mail to keep him busy.(He said that they are hooking up his computer today.) You can send the message from this site...He is Hotel179.Jamie

Hello All!!!

Bob
Boy, what a night that was...riding along, minding my own business and then what did I see......not eight little tiny reindeer but headlights of a vehicle shining on me. I was northbound on a two-laned single roadway and the young man in the truck was headed south. He made a left turn into my oncoming lane and this is what went through my mind," Boy, i need to stop very quickly and hope that we don't make contact because if we do then this is going to hurt really badly but if I zig where he zagged then I may avoid it all together.....well, hell that's not going to work....here it goes....BAAAAM....SCRAAAAPE....To the ground....Silence." That process took a micro-second in real time but things slowed to almost nothing as the wreck progressed.
I awoke later as the Ambulance raced to Baptist Hospital in Penscola....I had just played my horn with the Penscola Civic Band performance at Evenings in Old Seville Square. My horn, in fact, was strapped to the rear of the R1150R and didn't get a scratch!
At the ER, the Doctor told two very laaarge individuals to get on either side of my pelvis and on his command, push as hard as they could....he said, "GO!". I can honestestly tell you that I've now experienced real pain at least once in my life, because that hurt.....a whole lot. They mummied me in sheets and clamped them shut with hemostats. He said that it was archaic but the only treatment left at that point. I was not doing well.
In the meantime, I had talked to the Social Worker and had given her a list of names and numbers to contact. Transportation to Birmingham was arranged by ambulance and I was back on the road. Dr. Stewart, the specialist in Bham told me that the ER Doc's treatment of squishing me back together and wrapping me in blankets was a "Life Saving" maneuver.....Well, I''m darned glad cause I haven't been to a Chicken Rally yet.
I'll have more tales of the hospital visit...you don't get that many crazy nurses, injured patients and a morphine pump and it not turn out to be like a Cheech and Chong movie.
My parents, brothers and their wives/children, and YOU the BMW Community have been so instrumental in the healing process. I can't wait to see you all soon and good gawd, Let's Ride.
More report later,
