Tuesday was a good day to get the New Year started with the first ABEES ride of the year. It was a bright clear day with a wonderful blue sky and a crisp 40 degree temp warming to 55 (CAVU as our pilots would say).
After a great country ham breakfast and a few promised chores, it was time to hit the road to the Warrior River to ride Vance's Mud Creek Ride (in reverse).
Some of the best motorcycling roads in the Birmingham area can be found there, especially Smith Camp Road. I believe Bruce Farr calls it "Upchuck Road". Smith Camp Road is off of Camp Creek and will test your riding skills as it twists its way to a dead end, splitting the peninsula with great views of the Warrior River along the way. At the dead end, there is the Smith Camp Store. You cant miss it because of all the deer antlers nailed to the front of the building. The owner is C. W., a very friendly chap who is willing to tell you all about his part of the country. Smith Camp Store is a good place to take a break and get some refreshments.
Backtracking on Smith Camp, you will go by the Warrior River Cafe, a great place for lunch. Their burgers are excellent. There is also another good lunch place in the area which is Quinn Landing Marina. To get there, extend your ride north on Camp Creek across the Warrior River and turn left at the Quinn Landing sign, about 1/2 mile north of the the bridge.
I checked off four ABEES points (the Mud Creek Ride, Smith Camp Store, River Cafe and Quinn Landing) on my very fun 144 mile ride and was smiling all the way.
