  • Test of attaching files

    bob,
you asked about posting a file where everyone could have access to it. I have played with your Excel file and saved it as MS-DOS text file. I am attaching that file to see if I can open it from within the forum.

Maybe Steve S. can help us here. We need to attach both an Excel file and a Garmin file. Can we amend the forum to accept other types of files other than the ones listed. Say a .gpx file or a .xls file

    Thanks Gary.

Great idea! That would sure make things more simple if we can present the files here.

If you attached the file, I do not see it here.

I showed the All Around Alabama route sheet to Vernon today at Bogart's. He want's to do it, but says we are nuts do it within 48 hours. Wonder what he will say when he sees Paul, Gail, Steve and Jim's times. As for me, I just hope I can do it within the 48 hours.

I looked again and found the attachment position and opened it. I think that presentation will not work for someone to use to navigate with. I am hoping that we can present it with the spacing and font size that is on the original document.

Can you try attaching it as a Garmin file that can be down loaded into Mapsource?

          Hi Martin.

I think that is what Gary mentioned when he asked Steve if there was a way to do it. I will send you the two files as an email attachment shortly. We are trying to find a way for club members to have access to the files at their convenience.

I think we are operating with the somewhat basic v.Bulletin.

If you are members of other forums using v.Bulletin you know that many features are available....photo posting, gallery for photos, want to have a chat night, post MapSource and routes... but with added features are added expenses and manpower to monitor the website.

I think...??? the club has paid the basic amount and we have the basic services..

With membership growing and more site use/forum activity... I would favor volunteer donations to add enchanced features to this forum.

Just an idea and my 2 cents worth....

I have made a change to the list of permitted attachments and I have attached two files. See if this is what you are looking for.

This will work as long as we don't get too carried away and use too much server space. I did not assign a Mime Type, so the files will not automatically open within the browser. They will, however, open if you have Excel or MapSource loaded on your client machine.

Steve, You de man. Was able to open both files. The excel file opened cleanly. When I opened the mapsource file I received a message that Explorer blocked it, but it gave me the option to continue. I did and the file opened in Mapsource.
Thanks a bunch, I think is exactly what we were looking for.
Tomorrow, I may attach a couple of files to continue the test.
This is a great way to pass our routes, waypoints and tracks to anyone who may want them. If all works, I will post another message in the GPS tip thread.

Since I don't have Excel but Microsoft Suite Spreadsheet, I have to save the .xls file and "open with" Microsoft Spreadsheet. Seems to work fairly well. I realize that both are Microsoft products but they are not 100% compatible.

Thanks Steve. Fantastic. I was able to open your files without a problem.

This is a significant additional benefit to enhance our ability to communicate here. Will you post instructions for the users to add files, or should we send the information to you, and then you place it in the forum?

                      Attach a file.

                      Bob,

Anyone can attach a file. When posting or making a reply click on the "insert attachment" icon as shown here.

Then follow the instructions for uploading the file from either your local computer or from the web.

                          Steve,
again thank you fo all your work on this forum and being so responsive to this particular request.
Now to the rest of us. Recommend you save your GPS files (be they Garmin Mapsource or other brand) as .gpx type files. This is a file structure that allows exchange of gps files between brands. So Vernon with his off-brand TomTom can use the files we have created in Garmin and vice-versa. I wll also post this in the GPS tips section.

Great idea Gary. I did not know that before having to convert my GPS files to use in the Zumo Additional features section.
