So Mother Nature took a shot at ruining the entire weekend for "good" riding but when I saw the late morning sun peek through, I decided it was my turn to up my ABEES point total. A quick look at the ABEES book revealed many points close by in Birmingham that I have not "checked off" yet this year. I plotted out a rather conservative route to gather as many points as I could but staying fairly close at home.
I headed off up Shades Crest Rd. It is a beautiful day with a light wind along the crest and hard to keep my eye on the road and away from the valley. I drop down into Lakeshore /Oxmoor and into Birmingham. First stop is the 16th Street Baptist Church and the Civil Rights Institute. From there it is only a few blocks to the Jefferson Cty Courthouse and the Birmingham Museum of Art. Leaving there I head to Sloss Furnace and arrive just at closing. The nice lady did let me in to read the historical marker before closing the gate. She is closing early due to threatening weather.....hmmmmmm.
But hey, I am on a mission here...I press on. Out Airport highway and over to the Flight Museum. I have not been through the museum in several years so I am anxious to take a look. OK..OK they are closed on Sunday. Guess this one will have to wait.
Across Oporto Road to Eastwood Mall and into Mt. Brook via Montclair Rd. Another really nice ride. I stop by the Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Look out Martin...DuBois & Steber...here I come!
Being a little hungry I am going to drop in at Gilchrist Drug for a sandwich...but....it IS Sunday and they are also closed. Well OK..I was here..on my bike...can I help it if they decide to close on a perfectly beautiful Sunday afternoon? Davenport's too?
I press on through the Village and onto 280 at Brookwood. Ah hah..Smyer Rd, I haven't done that in a while so I take that up to the crest again and ride it over to Vestavia. I ease down 31 and back home.
It has been a great afternoon of riding and all close to home. I have knocked down a total of 10 ABEES points and warmed up the bike for the ride to Blue Ridge next weekend!
