Tuesday was too nice of a day to waste. So Bob and I decided to go search the Coosa River for dams and other interesting places. We started the day at my house with coffee but had to stop a Jack’s in Jemison to get fortified for the morning. Bob had a large bacon, egg & cheese biscuit while I had a more moderate breakfast of eggs, grits, bacon, biscuit and gravy.
By noon we had found four of Alabama Power’s dams: Lay, Mitchell, Jordan and Walter Bouldin. All of these are between Clanton and Wetumpka. Our trusty GPS did try to lead us down a muddy dirt road but I have learned my lesson about dirt roads. The RT does not like them, especially if they are muddy. A little back tracking did not cost us much time.
All of this searching created a hunger deep down inside. We solved this with a mid-day pepper upper at Chocodelphia is Prattville. Hot chocolate and a cranberry-orange scone hit the spot. Our next discovery was the bamboo forest in the Wilderness Park in Prattville. Here we found 60 foot bamboo with trunks up to 6 inches in diameter.
By this time we a hungry again so it is off to Grumbles in Selma. We had the Reuben sandwich and agree that it is one of the best anywhere around. We ate on the patio while taking in the view of the Edmond Pettus Bridge. We worked off our lunch with a stroll along the river and the St James Hotel.
We finished the day by getting a couple more of ABEES points at the Dallas County Courthouse and Sturdivant Hall.
All in all a great day; beautiful sun shine, warm weather, good fellowship, great roads, good food and 17 ABEES points.
I have attached gpd file of the route if anyone is interested in good day’s ride.
