  • Club GS/Dual Sport Ride

After kicking around the subject a bit under the thread of "Angie's first GS Ride," I am starting a new thread that deals with the club GS/dual sport ride.

The ride will be the weekend of 10-11 NOV. Location : outback northwest of Waterloo.
Plan: Meet at the Riverwalk Cafe in Waterloo at noon on 10 NOV. From there we will ride some back roads to a primitive camping spot on the Tenn. River (we will have access to water.) We will unladen the the bikes, pitch our tents, then go exploring some of the gravel/dirt roads to include some watercrossings. We will spend the afternoon riding, then mosey back to the camp site and cook dinner. I have two backpacking stoves and some cook gear (probably enough to cook for 4 or 5 individuals. I will bring the food and we will split the cost. Tentative menu is blackened tilapia, stewed potatoes, steamed greenbeans with onions and tomatoes, and french bread.
All participants need to bring their own drinks and a plate/cup/eating utensils.
I need one or two others to step up with a camp stove and a couple of pots to cook in.
Come September/October, I will flesh this out and send all participants a Mapsource file with waypoints. I will provide hardcopy Topo maps of the area.
Should be a lot of fun.
Maybe we could have a short refresher class before the ride on some off-road riding techniques. So come with your own thoughts and be prepared to explain your techniques and also prepared to learn some new ones.

OK Mr. World Traveler. You've got a winner here and your menu would make one believe that you just may be a Chef "Redneck".

I have some cooking stuff, and will bring it with me. There is one cooking item that should be in every one's camping pack other than your eating utensils and a camp cup. That is the JetBoil with a coffee press. http://www.jetboil.com/. The real "King" of camping is Phillip Warren, and he introduced me to this great little "gizmo" last year and I don't leave home without it. I also have a compact charcoal grill that I can bring if you need it.

Please let me know if there is anything that I can help you with.

Sounds great! The menu sounds quite good. I will be glad to bring whatever utensils are needed as well. Once we "boil down" the list, just let me know!
One question...How many "slots" are there for this one? I have a couple of people I think would be interested but I don't want to overload the thing!

I'll help out on the cooking any way I can.....heck, I'll cook us a couple of cakes and bring them when we come. I can't wait as this sounds like a hoot! My off road riding techniques are pretty simple....when I fall off (and I fall off a lot), I get back on . Of course I'll need help picking up the bike cause I'm a girl . Thanks for putting this together for us Gary!

          Hey Vance,
Keep in mind that we don't want anybody that can ride better than we can .

            Posting of photos

Thanks to all for kind words of support. We will try to make this as much fun as possible and get back in one piece. Gail, if you ain't dropping, you ain't riding.
I am going to see if my picasa efforts work so here goes (you have seen most of them already)

Not sure that worked, thought it would change colors. Maybe I need the whole address including the photo file name.

            Gary

I see it did change colors once I submitted it. So seems to work. Thanks Bob for tutorial. Gary

              Great photos Gary.

Looks like we are going to have a blast. Glad I have my TKC80's mounted on Long Tall Sallie.

Good job with your Picaca post.

Number of Participants on GS ride.

I have no problem with anyone participating, but I think we need to keep this thing manageable since it is our first one. Waht do ya'll think? 10 to 15 riders. Right now we have 5 showing interest. Why don't we wait til bout 1 Sept and see if any more club members show interest. If not lets open it up to others. Good idea or bad? Lets hear from you.

Alittle mmore practice with the picasa program. These are some shots from last years trip to Copper Canyon. If I get this thing down will try and post some picts of our upcoming trip.

You're the road captain and call the shots (old Harley day's talk ) . What ever you say, is fine with me.

By Jove, I think you got the Picasa program down pat. Seeing your photos of the Copper Canyon makes me want to go, 'cept for the fall down. My friend in Houston, has been asking me to go for several years now. I may have to buck up and accept his offer. What is the best time of the year to go?

The two I am thinking of are club members. If you think 10-15 riders is a manageable crowd, I will see if they are interested. I just didn't know how many would be too many! This is gonna be fun!

                      Bob,
Oct is a good time to go to Copper Canyon. The rainy season generally ends the end of Sept or early Oct. Yet it is still early enough that you don't get to cool at night. Creel is at 8000ft+. Notice the frost on my moto in the photos of the previous post. This was early Oct. 3 good days ride from Houston. 2 to get to the border at Presidio (that's where you really should cross cuz it's easy there and uncrowded.) From Presidio all days ride to Creel, but a pretty ride. Maybe we can watch my Copper Canyon video at the Sept meeting.

Dang it Gary! I just looked at the Copper Canyon photos. I have heard about that from several folks and now I want to go even more. If this Waterloo thing goes OK maybe we head down there next! What do you think Gail? ...Cornbread?

                          Copper Canyon

Didn't realize there was so much interest in Copper Canyon. May be one of the best trips I have been on. Better than going to Alaska and half the distance. Probably have 400 photos. Will post a few more samples and may feed a few more down the road. Takes to long to upload the dang things.

Copper Canyon is a bit advanced for my limited off road skills, but I am definitely up for the Waterloo campout in November. Great pics Gary.

Doggonit guys and gals, ya'll are making me wish that I had a GS. Sounds like a lot of fun. Great photos Gary, Copper Canyon looks like a real adventure. I've heard a few of the guys that go to Heberts talk of their trips there. They said it was some wild riding. I don't think the silver bullet(RT) would make it though, at least not with me on it. Have fun on the GS ride.
