  • Special Opportunity Who Wants In?

I have come up with this event because Mari and I want to ride down to Apalachicola and partake of some of those world famous "ersters". Something I have had in mind to do since we were down there for New Years. So I am posting this event both here and on a couple other sites to see what kind of interest will be generated and just who might like to go. Let me know what you think about it and if you are interested in going...we are.

For Norwood and maybe some others this format is not new and has been used by several other groups. I think it will be interesting to see what kind of turnout we will have??? I have set this up with the folks at Boss Oyster but they need to have some idea of how many might show up so they can be staffed and have enough ersters and other stuff. So no reservation is required but we do "kinda" need to know...think it over and post your thoughts!

OK, so I have been thinking….

I want a destination to which to ride that could also be an event that could attract riders from all over the region. I could put out an “All Call” to friends and on the forum as an open invitation to see just who and how many would show up? Create an informal gathering of folks with a common interest in BMW motorcycles and riding and eating and smiling and meeting new friends while visiting with old ones. Hmmmm…..

So here is what I came up with. My wife Mari and I really enjoy visiting the “Forgotten Coast” of Florida specifically the Apalachicola, St. George Island area. Home of the world famous Apalachicola Bay oysters this area is rich with historical significance and heritage as well. And you can’t beat the food at a place called Boss Oyster there that includes oysters fixed about a million or so ways as well as a full menu to suit most everyone’s taste.

The Details: The informal gathering is intended for BMW riders and their guests interested in gathering to eat and fellowship with like minded riders. No frills, no program, no awards just show up at the appointed time, eat and have fun. Then you are on your own, you can stay or just ride off!

I have spoken with Beverly (850) 653-8139 at The Apalachicola River Inn http://www.apalachicolariverinn.com immediately adjacent to Boss Oyster. The same folks own both the restaurant and the Inn. This is a small and quaint 22 room Inn on the river bank with both King, Queen and Double bed rooms available. Availability is good as of now but of course all rooms are available on a first come first served basis so book early to get one. When you speak with Beverly, be sure to mention you are with the BMW Group.

There are several other hotels in town that you can contact directly if more rooms are needed. The closest tent camping I am aware of is not far away at Indian Pass Campground. http://www.indianpasscamp.com .

    So that is the plan and here are the specifics;

The Date: Saturday, September 18, 2010
    Time: 3PM
    Place: Boss Oyster Restaurant
    123 Water Street
    Apalachicola, FL
    850-653-9364 (Restaurant)
    850-653-8139 (Inn)

    Coordinates: N29 43.636 W84 58.941

Who would be interested in meeting Mari and I there? We don’t need a firm head count but we would like to know approximately how many to expect so we can “warn” the restaurant. The oyster skiffs are ready and our room is booked!

    Vance,
Just for reference, how long does it take you guys to get there from the Birmingham area? And which route is the best to reach the area avoiding the most traffic?

From Bham it takes about 5 hours. We would go down 231 out of Montgomery to Dothan and Panama City. Then East on 98 to Apalach. Home you guys can go!

Hey, will be unable to attend the September RTE..

Want to throw out suggestion for something in 2011... a Blues weekend in Clarksdale MS... experience the Shack Up INN, you never forget it.. I promise

shack Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale, MS is known worldwide for it's quirky use of sharecropping shacks turned hotel rooms. Since 1998 the 'Bed and Beer' has been a haven for blues musicians and people who enjoy the music made by them. There's something undeniably special about this place—music fills the air with life, the visitors bring a diverse energy from the world over, and the staff radiates warmth and their own brand of unhurried care, making it a truly unique experience.

And there is a some great riding in Delta and many good places to have lunch...

side trip down to BB Kng's place is good trip

Remember, kids can't write the blues...because there are never going to die!

That's a long way to go for oysters! Wintzels in Gadsden has appalachicola oysters on the half shell with a bud lite for four bucks at happy hour. But I know, it's about the ride.

Excellent suggestion. This is but one of the places I have heard so much about and have yet to visit. Give some thought to putting an event together Norwood!

Jim, you are right! The roads are not particularly great getting there (lol..) but it is a very interesting place to visit once you do get there....and the "ersters" sure are gooooooood to boot! I am going to post this on the MOA regional forum too just to see what kind of response we get. Having never done an event like this, it will be interesting to see what (if anything) happens!

"experience the Shack Up INN, you never forget it.. "

Hey Don. You are right about that. My first time there, several years ago, I was blown away by their complex of old share-cropper shacks and the canteen. From the outside, the shacks look original, but the inside is well appointed with modern conveniences, even though it still looks like a shack in there. Last year they completed building lodging facilities that look like metal storage bins. In the beginning, it was no problem to book a shack, now the Europeans and Japanese have discovered the place, and they stay booked, so reservations need to be made early.

Ground Zero in Clarksdale is a good place to hear live Blues. There are also a few rooms available upstairs. There is pretty good too and the beer is cold.

The Shack Up In is located on Hobson Plantation, the place where the cotton picker was invented.

The Apalachicola RTE was a lot of fun! We had 13 attendees in total and enjoyed great food and fellowship. Albert & Anna White / Pierre And Gilda Nicolas / John And Jeanne Zibell / Gail And Lana Kaltz / Mike Greenwood / Darryl And Terry Falkner along with Mari and me. We took over the porch at Boss Oyster and had a great time! The rooms next door were located right on the river and offered a fantastic view! This morning we enjoyed a great breakfast and headed along our way. We all agreed that this was a lot of fun and we need to do it again...soon! Here are our pictures...

                          Hey folks,
I was out on a Saturday morning ride from Panama City to Apalachicola and back when I noticed a few more than usual BMW's on the road! It was a good site to see folks with helmets and safety gear mixed in with the local squids!

Vance, sorry we missed the "Boss" but we did enjoy an excellent Appalachian lunch at Benedikt's and a wonderful organized ride through North Alabama led by Gary Nesmith, aka Mister Favor (from Rawhide). Gary did an outstanding job of leading us through some Alabama backroads that rival any that I have ever riden. Thanks to Gary!
