  • Rider Training...Who Would Be Interested?

Bob Steber has a post in Chit Chat right now showing a closed course rider competition. That got me thinking again about rider training. Several years ago we had a club training session at the Traffic Safety Center in Montevallo. I am certain we could again put together another program to provide MSF training there for all levels of training from beginner to advanced.

What I would like to know is what is the level of interest here in the club for arranging that type of event. My first thought is that we would hold it at the Center in Montevallo, but of course they have training sites around the state so if there was enough interest, I am sure we could put together alternative sites around the state.

I will check with Rick at the Center for pricing but as I recall the beginner course is about $150 per person and lasts three sessions requiring a weekend commitment and bikes are provided. The Advanced Rider Course is done in one session on your own bike and runs $85 I believe.

Let me know who would be interested in a training opportunity like this? Do you know someone that wants to learn to ride and could really benefit from a beginner course? Let me hear from you either pro or con so I can gauge the overall level of interest...

    what say YOU???

Vance, do I understand this to mean it would be a special event just for the club and not a part of the course they already give? If so, very cool. I am interested, provided I don't have a conflict that would interfere. Our riding schedule is filling up fast. My interest would be in the Advanced Rider Course. Thanks.. Gail

Yes Gail. I am thinking of a class for our club members and surely we would have enough interest to fill it. I believe for the ARC (advanced course) they take 6 or so bikes and it is done in one session. Since it would be just for our members, we might even be able to schedule it on a weekday, provided they could get instructors lined up for us. I would think the advancd course would be more popular among our group and the easiest to get together.

Advanced for me. I went through it in 99 so I am due for a tune up. I will have to be back home in time of course.

Thanks Steve...Here is the update as I have just talked to Rick at the ATSC (Alabama Traffic Safety Center)

We need a minimum of 6 riders and a maximum of 12 to do an ARC (Advanced Rider Course). This could be done as a private event for our group as long as the date does not conflict with their public schedule. A weekday course could also be made available in Montevallo with enough notice. The ARC course is 8 hours in length and so is of course done in one day. This would be a great opportunity for 6-12 riders!

Another option he offered would be to host a larger private event for a larger group and hold two or more ARC courses on a single day on separate ranges. That could be an all day eventfor more members than actually taking the course with fun, pictures and even a cookout if we wanted to...just have a party!

The course charge is $85 for the ARC. So let's get a head count for now. Once we get six I'm in I will start working on dates. Steve, we'll wait 'til you get back home...so we would be working on a date in May or early June....maybe before it gets toooooooo hot!

                      lemme no!

Vance, I'll commit for the ARC, providing it will be before June. John and I are already making lodging reservations for our June 1-21 Canadian Rockies ride.

Hey Vance, It's time Jill finally take the beginners course so she can start to put some miles on her bike. Count her in, depending on schedule of course.
And it would be a good idea for me to take the advanced course at that time.

Great Chris, we will talk about this over the weekend and hopefully get some commitments...at least enough to try one of the ARC courses!
