  • Travel Info for Suches

The bumper sticker “So many roads, so little time” will certainly apply to our weekend in Suches. There is no way to get there or no place to ride to that doesn’t take you over some of the best motorcycle roads in the country. So how do you choose? Perhaps a destination that has food, music and beer, or perhaps hiking and scenic vistas, or maybe both. For food, music and beer my ride would take me to Helen. You’re right, it is packed with tourist and the traffic can be terrible. But its a small town and you can walk from one end to the other and the german food is hard to beat. There is always a band playing Um-Pa music and the beer is alway cold. You can pick almost any restaurant. My favorites are Hofer of Helen for lunch, and the Bodensee for a full German meal.

Another reason to choose Helen as your destination is the route that gets you there. Wolf Pen Gap, AKA GA180, is a given for going anywhere east. Its a great road - but not on my top five. GA 180 continues east after a short jog north with US 129. About a mile after turning back to the east, one of my top five picks turns south to no where. It is the Richard B. Russell Scenic Byway AKA GA 348. On several occasions I have ridden to one end and turned around to repeat the route in the opposite direction. Its great both ways!

If you are looking to walk off some of that great German food, take GA 17 - another great road- north out of Helen back to the east end of GA 180 and the best scenic view in Georgia On your way back to Suches, take a detour on GA Spur 180 to Brastown Bald, Georgia State Park. From the parking lot you can hike or take a shuttle to the highest point in Georgia with a view from atop the observation tower that will be sure to have you looking for your next great destination!

Ride safe and don’t forget to enjoy the smell of honeysuckles or even the cows!!
