  • 2016 Motorcycle Cannonball announced

This has just been put out for public release:

If anyone is interested in the next Cannonball it has been announced to the previous riders and is now being announced to the public. On Friday,September 9, 2016 100 riders will leave Atlantic City, New Jersey on a 16 day adventure to their ultimate destination, San Diego, California. This event will be an ultimate century race. No motorcycles built after 1916 will be allowed to enter. The route is built for early bikes that can only maintain around 40 miles per hour on straight flat roads. The event is almost full so if you are interested please let me know as soon as possible.

I made a good go of it on my '29 BMW R63 last time. My hope was that the age range for the next Cannonball would allow me to re-enter my R63 (after rebuild of course). However it is restricted to 100 year old motorcycles. Not to worry though, I recently acquired a 1915 Harley Davidson which I have entered for 2016.

I think it is great to ride a 100 year bike across the states, I don't care what kind it is , I'm a believer if it is two wheels we will be there for you.

They didn't make BMW bikes 100 years ago Gail, but I think you knew that. Maybe he can put some roundels on the tank.

I would love to attempt this on a BMW again! Too bad they did not build bikes earlier. Honestly never thought I would own a Harley, but I do love old bikes. The other one I was considering was a 1913 Excelsior (built by the Schwinn bicycle company). I flew out the the west coast a few months ago and looked at both. I decided on the Harley as this is the first year for a 3 speed transmission which actually makes it a street-able bike. The Excelsior was super cool but a single speed. That would be really tough in a lot of situations. A friend of mine from CA has a single speed 1914 Harley he rode cross country a couple of times. He had to be pulled over a mountain pass on a tow rope - not fun.
