ATTENTION! Saturday, June 11th RIDE TO EAT/Museum Tour
Per Martin Benson request, Paul & Gail Thorne are hosting a RTE and a Civil War Museum tour in Mississippi. Gail & I will meet the riders at the Shell station in Reform, AL located on Hwy 82 (main street thru Reform) at 8:30 AM Saturday, and will depart from there promptly. We will then ride to Starkville, MS for a tour of the Starkville Civil War Arsenal. The owner is a friend and welcomes visitors by appointment. He does not charge an admission, but donations are accepted. He has spent his adult life studying the history of the Civil War and participating in many reinactments. He has a collection of various CW pieces, cannons and rolling stock. Hopefully, no Yankees will be harmed at this event!

After the tour, we will ride to Columbus, MS for lunch at Christy's Hamburgers, which recently was voted "The Best Hamburger in Mississippi". Hope you will join us....

Jake, we plan to be at lunch by noon. The ride from Reform to Starkville is about 60 miles.
          See you there.

            The Starkville Civil War Arsenal

Six of us (Paul, Gail, Martin, Vance, David, Jeff) made the ride to the arsenal. The arsenal is a private collection of Civil War Field artillery carriage open for public viewing by appointment. Duffy Neubauer, curator and a friend of Paul Thorne, made us feel right at home.

One of the components of the field artillery is the many different types of rolling stock or carriages which make up an artillery battery. The Starkville arsenal is one of only three locations in the country where you can view all the specialized artillery rolling stock at the same time in one place.

We followed up the visit with lunch at Christry's for a great cheeseburger.

After lunch we went our separate ways: Vance to Mobile, David & Jeff to David's farm, Paul & Gail to Steens and me back to Alabaster.

I took a road that I have taken before is was repaved. It is now one of my favorite rides. Here is a gps file for the road Wallace Chapel Wire Road Ride.gdb. It is 13 miles of smooth black top like a twistie snake with several elevation changes.

            Pictures of the day.

Thank you Paul & Gail for putting this together.

Wow what a great day! Thanks to Paul and Gail for putting this together. Duffy is certainly an interesting guy! This would be a great place to return to with a larger group sometime!
As Martin said I headed from there on down to Mobile to continue my Explore Alabama quest to benefit the Eldridge Children's Home. If you are not familiar with the challenge this year, checkout all the details here on the site. I finished off the great day with a full evening at the Mobile Speedway with some great Saturday night stock car racing and a demolition derby! Awesome!!!

And now I get to take the looooong way home today....awesome!

                Thanks, Paul and Gail.
The ride, the tour of the museum and lunch were great. The museum was so informative that people had to walk away from me after church Sunday if they didn't want to hear about Civil War artillery. I would love to return to the museum for another 8 minute slide presentation.

We are glad that everyone enjoyed the day! Hopefully, we can do it again maybe when it is cooler. I would like to go back, just for the horse & mule program! I could stand for an hour looking at those old photos. It all just amazes me. Gail
