I am hankering for a ride Saturday and brother rob and maybe Lee will join me. We are planing a ride from the Bham area up to Oakman, AL to check out Old York USA there. This is a music park where regular events are held where there is an old west town replica. The owner of Old York also operates a steakhouse the Jeff Sparks tells me is an awesome place to eat as well. Here is the scoop on the park;
This site features more than 20 old buildings including a steakhouse, gift shop and western store. Described by historians as being 'as authentic as you can get', Old York shines with ghost of the Confederacy and the old West. Nestled in the foothills of south Walker County, York was the original site of the town's first Post Office where in 1862, Confederate troops were sworn in. This sportsman's paradise will live forever in Alabama history. The Post Office was located in the rustic white house in the center of the heritage park. For nearly a century and a half, the Corry's have resided on the acreage in and around Old York. In its day, York was a mecca for coal mining activities. Five saloons sprang up with the addition of the railroad - the backbone of our nation. One of such watering hole - the Chamborden Saloon, is recreated, complete with the original bar, liquor cabinets and mirror.
Jeff Sparks alerted me to this location and suggested it might be a good place to hold a meeting so I am going to check it out! I don't believe the steakhouse opens until 5PM or so and therefore we will need to find another spot to eat on Saturday (one must plan these things you know!) So after visiting the park in Oakman we will ride down AL 69 into Northport with a planned stop at Archibald's BBQ just one of our ABEES stops there.
This will be a leisurely stroll through some great country on great roads. If anyone wants to join us, let me know. I am planning to launch from the convenience store at Morgan Road & Shades Crest Road at 9AM for the ride up. Would love to have you join us there or anywhere along the way!
