  • Don and Barbara's Grand Adventure

Greetings from the great state of South Carolina. After a little over 2 weeks visiting our son and daughter-in-law in Springfield, VA and seeing quite a few of the sights around our nation’s capital, we are on the road again.
Of all the wonderful sights we have seen, the most wonderful was seeing our son take the oath of Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force. It made both of us very proud to hear the many nice things his Colonel, his most recent supervisor, his fellow airmen, and other guests had to say about him. For those of you who don’t know him, Don, Jr. (or Kel to us) has been in the Air Force for almost 16 years. He is a very proud and dedicated military man; and we are extremely proud of him and all he has accomplished during his career.
This was our fourth trip to the DC area and I have to say I just love this area. Not the traffic, not the people who drive as if they were taught by blind baboons, and certainly not the lack of consideration that is often evident, but the history, the free museums and monuments, the public transportation which makes it possible to avoid the aforementioned traffic and drivers. We caught the metro bus in front of our kids’ house, rode to the Pentagon Metro station, caught the Metro to the Smithsonian or Foggy Bottom or Federal Triangle stop and we were within easy walking distance of so many interesting, entertaining, informative attractions and most of them are FREE. There are other attractions that area’t free but are reasonable and we enjoyed one of those this past Sunday. We attended a performance of the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. I totally enjoyed it but I did catch Don about to doze off one time. You know what they say about taking the boy out of the country…
Of course, I would not live anywhere near there if you paid me, but that’s a whole different story.
We’ve spent the last 3 days riding down the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway and we are now on our way to Charleston, SC then down the coast to Key West if our resolve holds. Still having a great time and loving the ride.

          • Don and Barbara's Grand Adventure

Hello from Georgia. We are in Brunswick, which was our home for about 10 years in the '70's. It sure has changed in the last 30 years though.
We spent 2 1/2 days in Charleston, and really enjoyed it. We did a carriage tour of the historic district and a tour out to Ft. Sumter, and made two visits to the Praline store in the Market area. Our biggest complaint was trying to find a parking place for the bike. There are lots of parking garages (for $7.00 per day) but motorcycles are prohibited because of the mechanical arms. There are other parking lots for the same rate but they weren't real convenient and were full most of the time so we paid parking meters a bunch of money. Oh well, it was fun anyway.
We have had great weather since we left Kel's house but we are looking at the weather and wondering if it will hold up for us. We certainly can't complain if we do get rained on though because we have had so little rain on this trip, which has covered about 27,500 miles to this point.
We are looking to be home within the next week to 10 days, and I think both of us are about ready. We will let you know if we lose our resolve after St. Augustine or make it all the way to Key West.

              • Don and Barbara,
As you travel south from Brunswick, Florida Highway 200 leads to Fernandina Beach. There is a high bridge that crosses the intercoastal waterway and immediatly after crossing the bridge make a right turn into Barbara Jeans restaurant. It is one of my two favorite places to eat in Florida. They have the best crab cakes that have ever crossed your lips gauanteed! The county fire marshall there is an old friend that introduced me to my bride and to Barbara Jeans. And you know you can trust a fireman for good food. (and pretty girls) On the north end of the Island is historic Fort Clinch which is as old as St. Augustine's fort or maybe even older. Wish we could be there to tour Florida with you, it was home to me for 15 years and 20 for Suz.

                      • Don and Barbara's Grand Adventure

Hello from way out in the country in Barbour County Alabama. We are home at last. We got here Friday afternoon to find our house locked up, which was a good thing, but without a key to unlock the doors, which was not so good. My friend locked up the doors rather than the deadbolts and we only had deadbolt keys. So we had to break in which was so easy it was scary. Everything here was fine, except for lots of dust, cobwebs, spider webs and a little mildew.
As you all know from reading our posts, this trip has been incredible from start to finish. We were gone 8 months and 4 days and logged just shy of 29,000 miles(57 miles actually). We visited 35 states, 2 provinces and a territory in Canada and got our passport stamped at 82 National Parks, Monuments and Battlefields. Don says this is the only trip we have ever taken, that he was excited when we turned toward home. I think knowing we didn’t have to go back to work was the reason for that, though.
We did get to Key West, but only as a day trip last Wednesday. Since we were there in January we only wanted a picture to show the bike at the southern most point and we got that. We had lunch at Margarittaville and turned for home. The trip, since leaving Springfield, was done in a rather "hurry up" mode but we enjoyed the ride…except for the traffic down the east coast of Florida.
Thanks to everyone who read our posts and encouraged us with you comments and prayers. They were truly appreciated. Thanks to everyone we met on the road, who also gave us encouragement, your friendship and prayers. You made the trip even more enjoyable and unforgettable.
