Don and Barbara's Grand Adventure
Greetings from the great state of South Carolina. After a little over 2 weeks visiting our son and daughter-in-law in Springfield, VA and seeing quite a few of the sights around our nation’s capital, we are on the road again.
Of all the wonderful sights we have seen, the most wonderful was seeing our son take the oath of Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force. It made both of us very proud to hear the many nice things his Colonel, his most recent supervisor, his fellow airmen, and other guests had to say about him. For those of you who don’t know him, Don, Jr. (or Kel to us) has been in the Air Force for almost 16 years. He is a very proud and dedicated military man; and we are extremely proud of him and all he has accomplished during his career.
This was our fourth trip to the DC area and I have to say I just love this area. Not the traffic, not the people who drive as if they were taught by blind baboons, and certainly not the lack of consideration that is often evident, but the history, the free museums and monuments, the public transportation which makes it possible to avoid the aforementioned traffic and drivers. We caught the metro bus in front of our kids’ house, rode to the Pentagon Metro station, caught the Metro to the Smithsonian or Foggy Bottom or Federal Triangle stop and we were within easy walking distance of so many interesting, entertaining, informative attractions and most of them are FREE. There are other attractions that area’t free but are reasonable and we enjoyed one of those this past Sunday. We attended a performance of the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. I totally enjoyed it but I did catch Don about to doze off one time. You know what they say about taking the boy out of the country…
Of course, I would not live anywhere near there if you paid me, but that’s a whole different story.
We’ve spent the last 3 days riding down the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway and we are now on our way to Charleston, SC then down the coast to Key West if our resolve holds. Still having a great time and loving the ride.

The county fire marshall there is an old friend that introduced me to my bride and to Barbara Jeans. And you know you can trust a fireman for good food. (and pretty girls) On the north end of the Island is historic Fort Clinch which is as old as St. Augustine's fort or maybe even older. Wish we could be there to tour Florida with you, it was home to me for 15 years and 20 for Suz.
