  • Ron Shae hit a deer

Ron Shae, riding his GSPD, this morning at 11:am on the way to Firetower Road hit a b i g deer. Ron was going about 40-50 mph when the deer came out of the woods like a bullet running in front of him before he had time to react. Upon impact, the bike went verticle and spun around 180 degrees pitching him off and landing on his leg with the cylinder head clamping his knee to the pavement. Tom and I quickly lifted the bike off Ron and rolled it over out of the road. Ron was unconscious for a minute of so, but was able to communicate with us shortly after he regained consciousness. The medics were there within 10 minutes after calling 911, amazing! They had Ron stabilized and placed in the ambulance quickly. Terry and Joan Ware arrived at the scene with their trailer shortly after being called and Ron's bike is now safely stored at T4.

After 2 plus hours in surgery at USB, he was moved to ICU. His spleen was removed and he took three units of blood. His bladder may be damaged also. After his initial surgery, docs determined that his knee required surgery and he is there now (6pm 12/29). Carolyn and some of his children are there.

Please say your prayers for Ron and Carolyn.

Our prayers and thoughts go our to Ron and his family. We wish him a speedy recovery. It's amazing how fast this can happen even when we are aware and watching for them this time of year.

Carolyn just called with an update on Ron. Fortunatly, surgery was not required for his knee. But, the docs found broken ribs and a collar bone. He is scheduled for 20 more xrays. He is on a resporator, so he can't communicate with Carolyn. She is staying with him tonight.

Carolyn just returned my call from a mesage I left. Bless her heart for taking the time. Hoping Ron can get off the respirator today and be able to wake up and communicate some. I pray this can happen today to give her some measure of relief in being able to talk to him.
Bob, I guess I will look to you for updates since I don't want to continually call Carolyn and bug her through this.

As of this morning Ron is still in ICU at UAB. The docs are attempting to take him off the respirator, but that is going slowly. They are also closely watching a subdural hematoma in his head. Knee surgery is being postponed until he is more stable. The good news is that his labs show improvement.

                          Update on Ron

My name is Jack Shea and I am Ron's son (the one one that looks like him). Pops hasn't changed much since he came out surgery on Thursday. They tried to take him off the respirator earlier today and it was a struggle. He seemed to have some difficulty today, but the last time we saw him (2100) he was resting comfortably. He had some additional CT scans this evening and they came back good!

We are hopeful that tomorrow will bring some positive change and they can get him off the respirator. We all appreciate your thoughts and prayers it is good to know my Pops has so many people pulling for him! I will continue to update this forum as we know more.
