Hi everyone. Just wanted to let y'all know what was going on with Wanda and me. We left home Sunday morning at about 11 A.M. trailering the bike on our trip out West. We got as far as Decatur Tx. by dark. Monday for my B-day we drove as far as Pueblo, Co. then stopped for the evening and went out to celebrate. We left there Tuesday morning and travelled west on US 50 to Canon City and had breakfast. While there we met two BMW riders who know Don Norwood and Tommy Arnold. His name is Wayne Hunt, don't remember the other guy's name. We had also met two BMW riders on Monday at a rest area on I-25 who were on their way to the rally. One of them also knows Don. After breakfast we drove up C0. 9 to Breckenridge and was wishing we were riding the bike instead. What a great road. We arrive at Wanda's cousin's in Fraser, Co. and spent the night. We let on the bike Wednesday morning for Jackson Wy. The temperature was 36 degrees at 6 A.M. About 2 hours from their house it started to feel like I was having trouble with the clutch actuating. I had lots of slack in the clutch lever and it kept getting worse as we rode. We stopped for breakfas in Riverside, Wy and I had so much play that I was afraid the clutch would not engage. I decided that our trip was over and we would hopefully be able to get back to Fraser and the trailer. Thre BMW riders arrived and after some diagnosing we found that the clutch lever adjustment screw had backed off a lot and after readjusting the problem was solved. What had me worried was that it seemed fine when we left in the morning but got progressively more slack as we went on. I thought mayb the slave cylinder may be leaking fluid. Problem solved and trip back on we proceeded to Jackson and arrived around 3 P.M. This morning we left around 6:30 A.M. and rode up Teton Pass into Idaho, then on Id. 33 & 28 up to Salmon for lunch where we met another BMW rider. Believe it or not this one did not know Don. We arrive at our motel between Lol and Missoula around 2 P.M. We head up to West Glacier in the morning where we'll spend two nights and hopefully finally get to do the entire Going To the Sun rd. We'll probably do it by bus so I'll get to enjoy the views better. Sunday we start out for Oregon with a couple of nights at Wanda's aunt in Portland before heading out for Salem on Wednesday. Hope the weather is nice for the rally. We've been lucky so far, no rain and most of the days temps begin in the 30s 0r 40s with the largest part of the day in the mid-60s to low 70s the later in the 80s. After the rally we may travel north into Canada for a few days then take our time travelling back towards the truck and home. Will update the trip when we can.

    Gator,

Sounds like quite the adventure. Glad you got the clutch problem sorted out. That would have been a bummer if it would have failed on you guys. Post some photos when you get a chance for us home bound guys.

Don Norwood is like Waldo. Everybody knows him and is looking for him.

I think everyone knows him because there isn't anywhere he hasn't been. Of course he never met a stranger either. I'm totally different, I don't even know who Waldo is.

Had a tough day yesterday. We left West Glacier around 5:30 A.M. headed for Wanda's aunt's home in Hillsboro, Oregon which is just west of Portland. We rode some really nice roads for about the first half or so of the trip until we got west of Spokane and hit a few hundred miles of nothingness and heat. Temps got up to about 95* before we arrived at her aunt's. We rode total of 569 miles before arriving a round 5 P.M. We were beat so we turned in early and got some rest. We have taken lots of pictures but they're all on the camera and I don't have a way to load them to my I-Pad. I'll have to take some with the I-Pad so I can post some here. We'll be leaving for Salem on Wednesday so we'll see some of you there. Wanda did talk to Jeannine on Saturday evening and I believe that she and Tommy were in Helena, Mt. We'll have more updates when we can.

            Gator,

If your camera has an SD card, you can buy a card reader for your iPad. It works like a charm.

Whilst you guys are all enjoying the beautiful northwest, I am sitting in Kabul trying to wash the sand out of my eyes from 2 full nights of Environmental training with Dept of State pilots that are visiting. I lost track at about 35 with the night vision goggles and zero illum. They just never get a chance to do it and are VERY rusty at it. I think I aged about 10 years. Glad I packed some extra drawers as well if you know what I mean!

Thanks for the tip about the crd reader Steve. I'll see if I can pick one up somewhere.

Somehow I'm thinking that Kabul is not quite as lovely as the Pacific northwest. Gotta watch dem gumment employees Steve, dey get a little rusty from sittin' around all day doing nuttin. Don't age too much, you never get the years back. Stick a pair of your used drawers in their luggage when they leave as payback. Be careful over there.

Well... Fletcher Clark and I arrived in Salem this afternoon.... Gator you meet a lot of folks in that Witness protection program.... friends for life.

Fletcher is doing the "Tour of Honor" stops and I am tagging along..must admit they are some really nice memorials in many small communities... One such was at top of very tall and round mountain in Midway Utah, we circled upward to the top and there was a very impressive memorial...and the view overlooked the valley and town.

We also stopped at few national parks to add to our collection...

We had dinner one night as guest of a friend, at a christian retreat for military families in the mountain near Buena Vista Colorado... the speaker that week was retired chaplain with Navy, Coast Guard and he and our friends rented ATVs and rode to the top of Mt. Elbert the highest peak in Colorado...we where 2000 feet above Independence pass... quite a trip and experience... well four days later...in Southern Idaho we stopped in a small cafe and there was the guy (Chaplain) and his wife...their daughter was working a summer job at a dude ranch nearby.. small world...

Then in Price Utah, we ate at a bar and grill...as I walked in I saw Steve Hebert... I went over and talked to him ...but it was someone else...BTW the guy thanks Steve for his service to our country.... I post a picture when I get a good connection..

Today... enroute the last 550 miles at every rest stop or service station I met folks going to rally, many I knew ...some where vendors ... think Ian was at same motel as we in Boise...if his TAG is ZEN and from NC...

Small world... see you at the rally Gator and Wanda and the rest of the crew...

Well the rally is over and we're back on the road. we left Salem early this morning after saying goodbye to Tommy &Jeannine. we headed north towards Canada and made about a three hour detour to Mt. St Helen's. What a great tour. It was very overcast the entire way there and the higher we road up the road to the visitor's center the more foggy it got until I could just barely see the road. we thought that we wouldn't be able to see anything but since we were about 3/4 of the way there we continued on. bout three miles from the top we broke through the clouds and were greeted with clear blue skies and sunshine. the view was fantastic. Before we got back down to I-5 it got cloudy and cool again.
The traffic up to and beyond Seattle was terrible so we did not make good time. we decided to stop for the day in Bellingham and start for Canada in the morning. we'll post updates when we can.

We had a nice leisurely ride today, left Bellingham around 7:30 and rode hwys 542 and 9 into Canada. After breakfast across the border we rode Canada 1 to Hope , then 5 to Merritt and 97 up through Kalowna. gorgeous scenery and riding high mountain roads most of the way. for most of the day the temps were in the 60s and 70s only reaching the high 80s in the valley coming in to Merritt, then up to 95 in Kalowna. We rode as far as Vernon and called it a day. I don't think we rode over 60 mph all day. In the morning we head north and join up with Canada 1 and head east for Golden passing through Canada's Glacier National Park on the way. Don't know if we'll get back in to Montana tomorrow or spend more time in Canada. So many beautiful mountains and lakes to see. More updates when we can
