  • Moundville Meeting - Saturday Ride(s)

Hello everyone! The Moundville meeting is in just two weeks. Bruce and I have been talking with both Gary and Bob, about our ideas for a ride on Saturday.

Both Gary and Bob mentioned the Aliceville Museum, featuring the German POW camp that was there in the early 40s. The museum is a POI in the ABEES guide. Bruce and I thought that would be an excellent destination. We can ride through Greensboro and see some interesting Antebellum homes still standing, and also ride by the Hale County Courthouse. We also can ride back through Carrollton and see the Pickens County Courthouse, and see if anyone can make out the legendary, face in the window.

There are two options for lunch during the ride. 1 - There is a small local (hole in wall) restaurant next to the Aliceville museum, that is a possiblity for lunch after the POW tour. 2 - Ride back to Northport, and have lunch by the river, at either Steamers, or Dreamland. It is only about 45 minutes ride from Carrollton to Northport.

I mentioned last month at the morning meeting the possibility of the Westervelt Warner Museum of American Art, or the Paul Bryant Museum. I believe the Art Museum would be the best choice and we can get there without having to traverse through to many traffic lights. The Paul Bryant Museum would take us through several traffic lights and student traffic.

I would still like offer a ride to the Westervelt Warner Museum, if there is enough interest. They have a wonderful collection of some of the best American Artist. You will not be disappointed. This ride could start a little later, in the morning, around 10:00 AM.
Give me your feedback. What are you interested in? Aliceville POW Museum, or the Art Museum?

If we do the Art museum, we would have lunch in Northport at Steamers or Dreamland.

      Linda,
Thank you for posting the info on the rides. I like the thought of providing a couple of options for riding. Hopefully, this will appeal to most folks. I vote for the hole-in-the-wall restaurant. You know I'm cheap or is that frugal. Actually, I generally find place like this have very good food and generally appreciate the business. Looking forward to it.

          Plantation House

          Don,

That was my first option, but I contacted them and was informed that they are not open for lunch on Saturday, only dinner.

They do serve lunch on Sunday, if anyone will be in the area on their return home.

I spoke to several locals, and they highly recommended the Plantation House. So I am disappointed that they do not serve lunch on Saturday.

Bruce and I ate breakfast at the diner next to the museum, and the food was excellant.

Hope to see you in Moundville, Don!

The Plantation House would be good if we could. Don't they serve rabbit, as well as other game dishes?

Jamie. Yes they have rabbit on the menu, but not on their excellent buffet. To the best of my knowledge, that is the only game dish offered.

My friend, Ann Kirksey, director of the Aliceville WWll POW museum sent me a note today saying that she told the owner of the Plantation House that we were coming to visit the museum and was disappointed in not being able to have lunch there. He told her that he would take care of us. I replied that we may not have enough riders to make it worth their effort and asked for her suggestion. With that said, we may be able to have lunch there. Either Linda or I will post the information if we can go there for lunch.

I hope you and Malvene will go on the ride. The museum is a place that is a must see in Alabama and we can be very proud that it is in our State. The old court house in Carrolton is an interesting place to see too. Some folks can see the ghost in the window, but I haven't seen it yet.

                    Bob,

Ann is a class act lady. She was so warm and inviting. She didn't hesitate to give me a mini tour of the museum and introduce me to everyone in the museum at the time. They were setting up for a group tour to come in last Saturday.
By the way, there is a display room setup featuring the Coca Cola plant that originally housed in the museum building.

I'm not surprised by her act of thoughtfulness and concern for our group to have the opportunity to experience the Plantation House. My original reason for stopping in the museum was to inquire about another possible location for lunch. The diner next door was a little small.

Let me know if you hear from her again or if you think I should call the Plantation House.

                    Thanks, Linda

It all sounds so good !!!!

but so does our dinner that Sat. night.
I can't decide between the catfish or the chicken.
Don't forget to let me know folks if you're going to Moundville and want a dinner. Linda needs to know which dinner. Since this is catered "Per plate" if you don't order ahead then you may not get dinner if everyone who reserves, shows up. Then again, if we have no shows I might get to try both !!!

                          Linda.

You are right about Ann being a class act. She is one of the most hospitable people I have have had the pleasure to know.

Absolutely, I will let you know if it is OK for us to go to the Plantation House. If not, the "hole in the wall restaurant" will do just fine. John Harper, Gary Nesmith and I are going to go there this Friday on the way to Sturgis, MS and will take her to lunch.

The plan is to head out around 9AM. That should make the arrival to Aliceville around 10:30 AM. Hope you can make it.

If not, would be interested in riding to the Westervelt Warner Art Museum? If we have enough people interested I will take a group there. We won't have to leave as early for the Art Museum, since up on Lake Tuscaloosa.

How many folks are planning on doing the group ride Sat from Moundville? It would be nice to give Linda and Bruce an idea in numbers so they can call ahead to wherever we will be eating lunch. Please post your plans on this thread or send Linda an email.
